Martha Roe Terry

Martha Roe (Moore) Terry was born on December 29, 1919, in San Saba, Texas, to Bill Moore and Lurline Roquemore. She was the oldest of five children, Bill Moore (Reba Nell), Constance “Conk” Moore, Donald (Arden) Moore and Paul, who left too early as a child. She passed on Friday, September 14, 2018 at the age of 98. Martha Roe married Lloyd Warden Terry on September 14, 1941. They lived happily until his death on February 22, 2001. They had three children; William “Billy” Terry (Judy), Rocky Terry (Loydene), and Sharon Reeves (Henry). They also had eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Martha Roe loved socializing and was a member of numerous clubs throughout her life. She belonged to the Pierian Study Club, Sew N Sew, Baptist Women’s Mission, Country Line Dancers, Red Hat Society, Garden Club, and Simpson Creek Home Demonstration Club. She also worked with friends at the library for many years.

John C. (Johnny) Johnson

On Sunday, September 9, 2018, Johnny, loving husband and father, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family at the age of 86. Johnny was born on October 18, 1931 in San Benito, Texas. He grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas and joined the Air Force in 1950. He married the love of his life, Juanita Johnson, on September 13, 1951. Johnny is a veteran of the Korean war. After serving in the Air Force, he moved to New Mexico where he took up ranching, owned a mechanic shop and eventually became city manager of Carrizozo. In the mid 1980’s he moved to Cherokee, Texas where he owned and operated J & J Water Well Services until his  retirement in 2014. During his time in Cherokee he was very active with the volunteer fire department. He enjoyed taking pictures of the beautiful Texas hill country wild flowers, slipping in a few cruises…ok several.

Peter Claude Sloan

Peter Claude Sloan was born November 5, 1938 in Brady, Texas to his parents Ruby Wood and Jack Henry Sloan. He lived with his parents on the Jack Sloan ranch in the house that was built in his birth year.
He attended school in Richland Springs, graduating in 1957. He was a star athlete in football, basketball and track and field, and retained many of his sports buddies as life-long friends.
After high school, he attended JTexas Tech University. He subsequently returned to his family ranch where he lived and worked for the remainder of his life, with the exception as a field analyst with the Texas Water Board, and a boat crew manager for the clean up for the Exxon Valdez oil spill.
After his time in Alaska, Pete returned to the family ranch where he filled his days with ranching and establishing a ranch real estate business.

Andres R. Hernandez, Sr

Andres R. Hernandez, Sr., was born on November 30, 1935, in Mexico. He passed away on September 5, 2018 at Baylor Scott and White Marble Falls. Visitation was held on Friday, September 7, 2018 from 6:00—7:00 PM at Heritage Funeral Home in San Saba. Rosary was held on Friday, September 7, 2018 from 7:00 to 8:00 PM at Heritage Funeral Home. The Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at 10:00 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in San Saba.
Andres lived in San Saba for most of his adult life. He married Maria Sosa Garcia in 1955 in San Patricio, Texas. Together they had five sons and five daughters.
Andres liked living in a small town. He spent as much time as he could being out in nature. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, tending to his pecan trees, and working on cars. He was known as a kind, loving, and patient man. He loved being with family and spoiling his grandchildren and great - grandchildren. He even had time for music and dancing in his life.

JeriAnn Preece Banks

JeriAnn Preece Banks, 46, of Ringgold, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2018. A native of San Saba, Texas, she has lived in the Ringgold area for the past 28 years. She was a former employee of Georgia Northwestern College for 14 years, was a member of the National Honor Society and of the Baptist faith.
JeriAnn is preceded in death by her mother, Geraldine Patton Preece, and grandfather, David Patton. She is survived by her husband, Ronnie Banks of Ringgold, GA.; father, Jerome Preece of San Saba, TX.; two grandmothers, Phennie Judkins of San Saba, TX, and Floatie Patton of Dalton, GA.; two sisters, Dena Preece of Ellijay, GA., and Darla (Joe) Preece Campbell of Port Wentworth, GA.; seven nieces and nephews: Carol Chadwick, Trevor Preece, Evan Martin, Cheyenne Martin, Destinee Preece, Aubrey Martin and Tina Marie (Mac) Martinez; as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.

John Johnson

John Johnson passed away on September 9, 2018 in Cherokee, Texas. John was born on October 18, 1931.
John is survived by his wife, Juanita Johnson, son, Mark Johnson, daughters, Cheryl Onstead, and Terri Brownlee and husband, Derrick, and one sister, Velma Brown.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Richard Johnson and Ruth (Goode) Johnson, sister, Betty Dolan, son, Weylin Johnson, and granddaughter, Michelle Onstead.
Visitation will be held at the Cherokee Baptist Church on September 13, 2018 from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. following Visitation at the Cherokee Baptist Church.
Funeral services under the direction of Heritage Funeral Home.

Karl Medford Schneider

In honor of Karl Medford Schneider (1953-2018), son of Medford and Pat Schneider, former residents of Richland Springs, TX, a service will be held at the Richland Springs Church of Christ at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 8, 2018.
Karl, a bio-chemist and long time resident of California, is survived by his wife, children, mother, sister, nieces and nephews. Heritage Funeral Home, Brady, Texas.

Glynna “Marie” Vaughn

Marie Vaughn, age 80, of San Saba, Texas passed away in Temple, Texas on Friday, August 17, 2018. Marie was born on March 31, 1938 in Brownwood, Texas to J.T. Miles and Fay Marie (Brooks). Marie married Joe Vaughn on May 23, 1958. Marie attended Business College in Lampasas, Texas to be a secretary. Marie worked in San Saba, Texas for the Department of Human Services for 40 years. Marie actually retired twice and returned to work once in September of 1993 and in December of 1997. She loved her job and helping the people of San Saba. Marie loved her family and spending time with them. Her smile and love for her family will be missed by all. Those left behind to cherish her memory are her three daughters; Sherry and husband Billy Harrison of Clyde, Texas; Janan Alldredge of San Saba, Texas and Cindy and husband Alan Lancaster of Brownwood, Texas; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of other family.

Joyce Magee Jones Mitchell

Joyce Magee Jones Mitchell passed away on May 22, 2018 at Brookdale Senior Living in Houston, Texas after a lengthy illness. Her two children were by her side as she passed peacefully from this world. As per her wishes, her body was donated to science and her ashes will be scattered by her children and granddaughter, Stormy, in Portland, Oregon at the International Rose Test Garden, across from the Japanese Botanical Gardens: a place Stormy visits weekly and always wanted her Mamaw to see. Joyce was born on November 15, 1932 in San Saba, Texas, daughter of Virgil Magee and Bessie Grumbles Magee. She attended San Saba High School and on June 9, 1950, she married Edgar Jones Jr. After Edgar's passing in December of 1998, she married David Mitchell in 2004. She is preceded in death by Edgar, her parents, her brother, Robert; and her second husband, David.

Raymond Fulton Barker

Raymond Fulton Barker died peacefully on August 11, 2018 in Kerrville, Texas at the age of 88. He was preceded in death by mother, Martha Starr Barker; father, Bob F. Barker; sisters: Nila Ruth Barker and Mildred McIntosh; and mother of his children, Naomi Barker. Born into a San Saba, Texas farming family, he used this knowledge in his early banking career to guide farmers in building their businesses. He spent 20 years in banking in the Lubbock, Texas area, at American State Bank of Lubbock and First State Bank of Shallowater. In 1971, he moved to Kerrville, Texas to become President of Chas. Schreiner Bank and Schreiner Bancshares multi-bank holding company. He served on the Boards of James Avery Craftsman and Schreiner College. He was appointed by Governor Clements in 1987 to the Board of the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) where he brought his personal knowledge of the needs of rural residents to improve LCRA’s services.
