Gerald Johnson, 85 years old, was born on May 20,1937, in Dallas Texas, and passed away on September 15, 2022, in San Antonio Texas.
Gerald grew up in the Spring Creek community and attended school in San Saba. He played multiple sports in high school and was namedAllAround Best Male Athlete when he graduated in 1955. He attended the University of Texas at Austin on a football scholarship during the Daryl Royal years and earned a business degree in 1959. He served in the Texas National Guard from 1960 - 1961. Throughout his life and career, Gerald ran a successful cattle ranching operation in San Saba County. He worked for Swift ConAgra over 30 years, where he spent his career until 1996. After Retirement, Gerald and Shirley moved to Spring Branch, Texas, and enjoyed life on the Guadalupe River.
Gerald and Shirley had two boys: David Clell, born November 12, 1960; and Walter Craig, born June 20, 1965. He continued his love of athletics by coaching both of his sons in multiple sports including football and baseball. He was an avid golfer and played in the annual Heart of the Hills golf tournament in Kerrville, Texas, every year. Gerald was a lifelong Texas Longhorn fan and never missed a UT game.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Dor and Juanita Johnson; his in-laws, Pete and Lois Johnson; his brother, Gene Johnson; and a sister, Janice Taff and husband Kenneth Taff.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years and high school sweetheart, Shirley Roe Johnson; his children: David Clell Johnson and wife Maria Brito Johnson; Walter Craig Johnson and wife Janis Johnson; grandchildren: Danielle Johnson, Richard Johnson, Elizabeth Johnson, and Christopher Johnson; sister-in-law, Joanne Johnson Ortegon; nieces and nephews: Brian Johnson, Guy Johnson, Mary Anne Johnson Mouse, Linda Johnson Cooper, Jana Taff Lackey, and Greg Taff.
A celebration of his life will be held at Heritage Funeral Home in San Saba, Texas, on Friday, September 23, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. All friends and family are invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations to be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
