From the July 18, 1940 issue of the San Saba Star–THE FLOOD OF 1938 – Two years ago this month, folks here were experiencing one of the worst floods in history, which damaged to the extent of one million dollars. However, old-timers, when remembering the rampaging San Saba River, recall another day, June 6, 1899, when, according to old papers brought to light by the local WPA Records Project, high waters were almost as disastrous as those of 1938. According to a record of damages of the San Saba River flood of June 6, 1899, tabulated by S. S. Chamberlain and R. S. Alexander by order of the Commissioners Court and filed in the office of S. N. Rector, county clerk, over 2000 horses, mules, cattle and hogs were lost in the ravaging waters. In addition crops were destroyed, and there was no Red Cross aid to alleviate suffering.

A July 4th Reflection

Body
July 4th is around the corner with traditional family gatherings, barbeque outings and fireworks displays. Many will hang the flag in front of the house in the spirit of patriotism. The faith, courage and sacrifice of the founding fathers have always amazed me. This nation was not birthed by accident or happenchance; it came about through intention, decision, tears, sweat and blood. People died so that this nation could live. What beliefs motivate such sacrifice?
