Sherman C. Behrens, born December of 1925, at a farmhouse near Roscoe, Texas, to Arthur A. Behrens and Rosa (Anderson) Behrens, went to be with the Lord July 29th, 2021. He was 95.
Sherman and his sister, Nelda, grew up at Wallace Creek. He attended Pebbly Point School and later graduated from San Saba High School in 1942.
Shortly thereafter, he joined the US Army and marched in the 3rd Army as a bazooka carrier under General Patton. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and later was part of Patton’s march to Berlin. Seeing the bombers flying back everyday to warm bunk beds, his dream was to join the USAF and fly bombers. That dream came true.
After leaving the Army, he attended Texas A&M (Class of ’51), joined the USAF, and got his wings flying B29, B36 and B50 bombers during the Korean War. He married Dorothy L. Shuman, and after being stationed at bases in South Dakota and New Mexico, they decided to raise their family in San Antonio.
After the Korean War, Sherman joined the Civil Aeronautics Authority (now FAA) and finished his aviation career as an Air Traffic Controller at the San Antonio International Airport.
Sherman loved hunting, fishing and working their ranch along the Colorado River outside of Bend, Texas. He served as a deacon at First Baptist Church in San Antonio for about 50 years. When his wife, Dorothy, passed in 2007, he later married Margaret Burns.
Sherman is survived by his wife, Margaret Behrens of San Antonio, Texas; son, David C. Behrens of Prescott Valley, Arizona; daughter, Nancy A. Wilson of Montrose, Colorado; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He will be buried with his wife of 54 years, Dorothy S. Behrens, at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
