April 25, 1974

Plenty of clouds passed by but it was not until early Sunday morning when the lightning flashed and thunder rolled did any substantial measurements of rain fell. The official gauge at San Saba Water Plant measured .19 while to the southwest, F. A. Sharp at Pontotoc reported an inch to 1.70 fell in the area.

Barbara Bailey will be San Saba's only representative in the Regional Track Meet which will be held in Brownwood April 26 and 27. Results of the girls track meet for District 15A held in Brownwood, saw Miss Bailey place second in the 80-yard hurdles.

ABC Television News may have a segment on San Saba sometime in July. We had the privilege of meeting Pam Hill from New York who is on assignment to record the conditions and what is being done to help underprivileged children. It should be most interesting to see and hear.

Three "Sweethearts" were named recently at San Saba High School. Shirley French was named DECA Sweetheart, Kathy Perry, VICA Sweetheart and Barbara Bailey, Track Sweetheart.

The Annual Junior Senior Banquet was held in the Cafetorium April 20 with Dick Davenport, Junior Class President, giving the welcome and Richard Johnson, Senior Class President expressing appreciation. Theme of the banquet was "Welcome to My World." The prophesy was read by Pam Emmons and the last will and testament by Rod Schoenbacher. District Judge Jack Miller was guest speaker.

The Cherokee 4-H Horse Club held of the best attended events with an "Old Time Trail Ride" on the Yates 7-Spring Ranch. There were 36 horses and riders making the tour with Mrs. Kenneth Boultinghouse and Mrs. Mack Yates, Jr., serving as guides. Kenneth Boultinghouse and Mack Yates Jr., served the a group barbeque supper at the log cabin on the banks of the Colorado River at 7-Springs.

San Saba Junior High Students find sporting events in their gym very hazardous to health and limb. Efforts were made to patch the floor but it was beyond repair. There are uneven bleacher seats and humps in the floor. When in use a mattress is used to cover the holes. The proposed bond election would replace the wood floor with a layer of cement and coaches are hopeful getting the cement covered with tile.

Cheray Isham and Dani Hardy qualified for the State Tennis Tournament by placing 2nd in Regionals in Girls Doubles.

Rochelle Sheri Williams and Danny Thomas Lemons were united in marriage on April 7. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Ben Goodwin of Lampasas, Mr. John Williams of Austin and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lemons of Bend.

The San Saba girls high school golf team won the Regional Tournament in Stephenville for the 2nd straight year. The team of Jill Woodruff, Tina Harvell, Melinda Walker, Kristi Sumpter, and Tana Burnham shot a 2 day total of 767 to win by 75 strokes.

Robert Ware, a 1982 graduate of San Saba High School and now offensive guard for the South West Texas Bobcats has been named by SWT Head Coach John O'Hara, as one of the most improved players on the Bobcat team. Ware played offensive guard for the San Saba Armadillos.

The first CROP walk to be held in San Saba was deemed a big success by Rev. Lynn Barton of First United Methodist Church, chairman of the event. According to Rev. Barton, he anticipates approximately $1500 will be turned in from pledges collected by each participant. A group of 85 persons, all members of different churches and organizations in San Saba County. A cross was carried for a period of time by different participants in the walk. "The cross represented the compassion and caring for others as Christ showed his compassion and love when he died on the cross for the world," Rev. Barton said.

Big fishing party--Hermon Rhodes, Charles Perry, Kirk Perry, Rodney Tedford, Lloyd Henniger, James Low, Jeff Low, Byars Walters, Roddy Maddox, Oliver B. Altizer, Ragan Altizer, Marty Gray, OH ME! did I leave anybody out? Lots of food consumed on the Llano River and few fish but a good time by all.
