Happy Herman's Hideaway

Hello, my San Saba loves, and once again I missed a publishing deadline due to holiday scheduling. One would think with my relaxed lifestyle of no schedule whatsoever, time would be of no issue, but my brain is sometimes as scattered as my toys, you know, all over the place. Umm, I hope mom doesn’t read that part. I wouldn’t want this to read like True Confessions; it could have disastrous consequences.

This past week we delved into a new culinary world of deliciousness. Several weeks ago, mom was telling dad about how as a child she loved baked apples, and so he began making them for her. Well, this past week he thought the same spices would go well with carrots and sweet potatoes, and shall I just say mom and I both may be surviving on baked apples, sweet potatoes and carrots for the rest of lives? My dear San Saba loves, want to taste magic in bowl…bake these three things with a bit of brown sugar, cinnamon, touch of nutmeg and a tad of regular sugar with a bit of butter and taste the wonder of it all. Now I must be cautious about my nutmeg intake as it can be harmful for me, but a little taste is okay. I did tell mom to hold out hope I would follow in her footsteps and become a vegetarian, but I would certainly celebrate the yumminess of our new discovery with her.

Speaking of food, I have been taking a steroid for my illness, and a side effect is extreme hunger. The parentals do not seem to understand the moment I eat, my brain tells me I need to eat again. In order to convey the message, one morning I decided dramatics was the only way to make my point - so I splayed out pitifully, sadly right by my empty food bowl for an hour and would not budge. Dad called and begged me to join him in the living room and even came into the kitchen, but I completely ignored him. Did my theatrics get me fed again? NO, but did I make a point? YES!

I would like to thank Dr. Kelly Hinton of the Copperas Cove Animal Clinic for finding a medication combination that has helped me find my feet again and ability to walk. Yep, I am up, around and back to bugging the parentals. Believe it or not, dad is so happy about it I think I could get away with the tearing down the house, and his reaction would be… “Look, he is still on his feet even after all that!” Chronic illness is such a difficult thing for a family to go through and sometimes I think more taxing on the ones who are well. Dad was so distraught, so heartbroken when I was not able to walk, and it hurt me even more. I am so grateful to Dr. Hinton for bringing his joy back or bringing his Hermie home.

The truth is my San Saba loves it all breaks down to taking full advantage of not only your moments but what you can be in those moments. Surprisingly the worst embarrassment is not exposing yourself to be an imperfect human but not embracing that you are and running with it. It is never important what others think of you but of paramount importance the belief you have in yourself. While we are on the subject though, I think you are incredible, and I love you so much. Thank you for being.
