70 Years Ago August 30, 1956
In observance of her birthday, Miss Mary Lou Little was honored with a swimming party on Aug. 21, given by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Little. The party was held at Mill Pond Park. Following the swim in Pecan Pool, a picnic lunch and party favors were served the group.
Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Cameron were hosts to the wedding party of Mrs. Gladys Ann Barnett and Paul Taylor with a barbecue dinner. The dinner, consisting of barbecued chicken with all the trimmings, was served on the lawn of the Cameron home.
Wayland Richardson, age 10, and Franklin Crain, age 12 were target practicing with their bows and arrows in preparation for the San Saba Archery Club that is being organized. Richardson, a fifth grade student, is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Halliburton. Crain, son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Crain of Richland Springs, is a seventh grade student.
Band practice, football practice and date set for school opening all make us realize that the long hot summer is history. On the ball, 'Armadillos.' Surely out of 70 boys football minded will come a team that will move faster than the animal for which the San Saba team takes its name. Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Stewart spent the weekend with their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Sherwood Herrington and Jayme, at Grand Prairie. The brought their granddaughter home with them for a two weeks visit before her parents come to spend their vacation with the Stewarts and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Herrington in Richland Springs.
40 Years Ago August 28, 1986
Harley J. Gary who will join the Math Department at San Saba High School recently retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel after twenty three years of service. Coming to San Saba from Delta Junction, Alaska where he was with the Cold Regions Test Center at Fort Greely, Gary received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Trinity University in the fields of Math and Computer Science.
San Saba Water Plant employees support the Dillos even at work with bright gold and purple chosen as colors for the new 80,000 gal. water storage tank now located at the plant. The ground storage tank is painted a bright gold with 'San Saba Armadillos' written in purple.
Head greens keeper at the San Saba Municipal Golf Course, Jerry Turner, tilled in the new grass on the greens after the sowing crew finished. All of the new nine fairways and greens have been planted and now the anxious golfers are waiting on Mother Nature to do her part.
Workers with Calco International, an exterior masonry renovation company of Georgetown have been working on the exterior renovation project at San Saba National Bank. Following water blasting, joints are being re-cut. The brick structure will be repainted and the cut-out joints will receive new mortar to give a new brick appearance. The bank is one of several building renovation projects which have taken place and continue within the business district.
Mary Stewart of San Saba was recently awarded an Award of Merit Certificate for Honorable Mention of her Poem 'Curtain of Night' entered in the World of Poetry 'Hurray for the 4th' Poetry Contest.
CURTAIN OF NIGHT Night drops her velvet curtain, star-studded, o'er the world; The unseen city lights, like footlights, softly glow.
Another day has been enacted, like a scene from Life's long play, And Night, the interval, has come to change the scene for Day.
At Dawn, Night's curtain once again is furled; The awakening cue is given: On with the Show!
