New circulation desk will be safer, more secure
The Friends of The Rylander Memorial Library will build a new circulation desk at the Rylander Memorial Library, thanks to a $5,000 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority and the City of San Saba.
The Community Development Partnership Program grant will help the library replace a worn-out circulation desk with one that includes a screen to prevent the spread of germs and a handicapped-accessible level compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, in addition to providing more privacy.
“The new desk will be the first thing the public sees as they come into the library,” said Mikie Bishop, president of the Friends of The Rylander Memorial Library. “The existing circulation desk has been in use since the library was built in 1976 and is in poor condition. It lacks the proper privacy protection a new desk can provide.”
The current circulation desk is not built to offer space for privacy or access for wheelchairs. Its laminate covering is chipped and broken and is showing signs of age. A new desk will provide a private place for visitors to fill out forms, transfer personal information and search for materials in the library.
“This project has been needed for some time, and we’re very grateful and pleased to receive this grant,” Bishop said. “Without it we would have to use money from our reserve fund. It’s comforting to know there is somebody willing to help communities with these types of projects.”
The library serves a population of more than 6,000 throughout San Saba County and is open to the public six days a week.
The community grant is one of 27 grants awarded recently through LCRA’s Community Development Partnership Program, which helps volunteer fire departments, local governments, emergency responders and nonprofit organizations fund capital improvement projects in LCRA’s wholesale electric, water and transmission service areas. The program is part of LCRA’s effort to give back to the communities it serves. The City of San Saba is one of LCRA’s wholesale electric customers and is a partner in the grant program.
