Robert Y. Broyles, Jr.

Thomas Jefferson Broyles moved his family to Texas after the Civil War. They settled in ranching country of the newly established San Saba County along Cherokee Creek in the Rough Creek area. There he built a home and raised a family. The area was known as Broyles Valley and at one time had a school. Robert Yeargan Broyles, Sr. was born in 1887 to T.J. and Georgia Broyles. After serving in France during WWI, Robert Sr. returned home and married Doris Ann Johnson of Cherokee. On Christmas Day, December 25, 1931, a son was born to this couple, and he was named Robert Yeargan Broyles, Jr. Robert Jr. grew up in Cherokee and attended 10 years at Cherokee School before finishing high school in San Saba, graduating in 1950. He decided to attend San Angelo College, but that was not a good fit at the time. So he, along with several friends, joined the Navy where he served four years, first as a fireman on Coronado Island in San Diego and later as an inventory specialist on The U.S.S. Lexington.

In 1956, Robert knew Cherokee was the only place he wanted to be and spent the rest of his life there working in the ranching business and being around his love of cattle and the outdoors. Robert served his country, county and community well. He served several years on the A.S.C.S. County Committee, Farmers Home Administration Board, San Saba Hospital Board, San Saba 4-H Committee, San Saba County Young Farmers, San Saba Livestock Committee, Cherokee School Board and Board of Director for Central Texas Telephone and West Central Wireless. In the late seventies, he received the San Saba County Friend of 4-H award and in 2014, received Cowboy of the Year Award from Hill Country Livestock Raisers Association. At an early age, Robert accepted Christ as his Savior and was baptized in Cherokee Creek. He was a member of and attended the Church of Christ.

Robert is survived by his wife of sixty years, Sue Woods Broyles; four sons: Al Broyles and wife, Christina, of Cherokee, Texas; Andy Broyles of Cherokee, Texas; Robbie Broyles and wife, Paulie, of Spring Branch, Texas; and Les Broyles and wife, Mandy, of New Braunfels, Texas; seven grandchildren: Will Broyles and wife, Sarah, of Cherokee, Jimma and Dustin Busenlehner of Cherokee, Texas; Colt Broyles and wife, Callie, of Cherokee, Texas; Lacy Broyles of Brock, Texas; Trevor Broyles and wife, Caitlyn, of Spring Branch, Texas; Skye Broyles of Spring Branch, Texas; Katherine Darien and husband, Hunter, of New Braunfels. He was also blessed with sixteen great-grandchildren; one brother and ranching partner, Paul Henry Broyles and wife, Sherri, of Cherokee, Texas; three nephews, two nieces and several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Sr. and Doris Broyles; sisters, Gladys Ann Broyles Conner and Georgia Broyles Patterson; and one niece, Doris Taylor. A Graveside Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. at Chappel Cemetery on Thursday, July 16, 2020, with Thomas Bowden and Doug Suggs officiating. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to a charity of your choice.
