100 Years Ago September 2, 1926
Morgan Callan and family left for Brownwood, where he will be with the Curtiss Printing Co. Mr. Callan has been with the San Saba News for several months and the family has made many friends during their stay here.
On August 24, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Martin, quite a number of the young people enjoyed a social given in honor of his sisters. There were thirty guests. Refreshments were served and a jolly fine time was had by those present.
A. R. Dockray has sold his popcorn stand to Edgar House. Mr. Dockray has been a familiar figure on the street of San Saba for many years and the children will all miss him. Mr. House is a San Saba county man and no doubt will continue to do a land office business with the children and grown-ups of this city.
At a meeting of the Board, August 27, the Board closed a contract with the Sanitary Appliance Company, of Houston, to install a septic tank and sewerage disposal plant at the new high school building for $1,000, installed, ready for acceptance before the next session of the school starts.
After a seven weeks tour through California, Mr. and Mrs. M. R. Wetherby and children returned home. In speaking of the wonderful state and development of California, Mr. Wetherby added that Texas has greater possibilities if the money was spent in Texas as freely as it has been spent in California. California has its western coast and Florida its East and Southern coast––so has Texas; we lack nothing but publicity.
60 Years Ago September 1, 1966
Gregory Daryl Bogard, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Bogard, has made the Distinguished Student list in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University. Bogard is a graduate of San Saba High School.
Larry Kelley and Mark Horton of San Angelo spent five days recently with Kelley's grandmother, Mrs. Laurence Hamrick, after completing a month's ranch work near Mullin. They will reenter San Angelo High School for the fall term.
Barbara Brown, drum major, will be leading the San Saba High School Band this fall in the halftime activities for the Armadillo football games and other occasions. She is the first girl to be chosen for drum major since 1950. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Brown Jr., Miss Brown has been a band member six years.
Sgt. and Mrs. Vic H. Woods and family visited with her mother, Mrs. Oneida Roy. Sgt. Woods has been transferred from Columbia, S. C. to San Antonio as an ROTC Instructor with Texas Military Institute.
Cherokee Indians' six-man team will open the grid season by playing host to the Rochelle Hornets, Coach Billy D. Jones has announced. This is the first year for Rochelle to play sixman football. Coach Jones said he didn't know much about the Hornets but would find out next Thursday night.
