The Richland Springs Coyotes launched their football season off to a successful start this past Friday with a win over the Lometa Hornets. Congratulations to the Coyotes, and best wishes to the players and coaches for a safe and successful season ahead. I also hear that Richland Springs ISD is off to an amazing start this school year. Our schools are an important part of what makes a small community special, and there are always opportunities for the community to lend a hand. If you have a little extra time and would like to volunteer—whether it is reading with students or helping in another way, stop by the school’s front office and ask how you can help. Sometimes giving just a little of our time can make a big difference in a child’s day.
The countryside is beginning to show the signs of late summer as the green gives way to brown and the dry grass crackles and crunches beneath our footsteps. We were certainly thankful for a little relief last week, with almost an inch of rain reported in the Bowser area. Friends around Lake Buchanan were even more fortunate, reporting around three inches of much-needed rainfall. I’m not sure what totals were received in other parts of San Saba County, but any rain this time of year is certainly a blessing. Hopefully, there is more to come for our pastures, tanks, gardens, and everyone who makes a living from the land.
I remember this time of year well from the years Jim, Kal, and I spent working on the ranch. When the pastures were dry and brittle, we were always especially careful anytime we used machinery, whether it was a hay baler, tractor, or even just driving through the pasture. We kept a fire extinguisher close by because you never know when a hot muffler might ignite dry grass or when a spark from a piece of farm equipment could start a fire. Conditions can change in an instant, and when everything is this dry, it only takes one small spark. You simply cannot be too careful this time of year.
The Grace Bible Study quilting group has started back up for its fall session, beginning Tuesday, September 1. We meet every Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Richland Springs Baptist Church, and you do not have to be a quilter to join us. Tuesdays are simply a time for Bible study, fellowship, and encouragement, and then about once a month we try to get together for some quilting as well. If you do not quilt, that is perfectly fine. We would still love for you to come, bring your Bible, and join us for the study and fellowship.
