100 Years Ago January 7, 1926
Joseph Boyd Cowan, sophomore in the University, withdrew at the end of the fall term to take charge of the San Saba Star, published at San Saba by his father.
J. W. Warlick sold his fur and poultry business to J. G. Holder and will move to the Capt. Woods’ farm in the Sloan community. Mr. Holder will continue to run the business in the same stand and will buy fur hides the remainder of the season. Mr. Holder will also handle poultry and all kinds of country produce.
To begin the new year with a bright front the Odd Fellows are having a new awning placed in front of their building on the north side of the square. Will Franklin is doing the carpenter work and J. W. Whisenant is setting the supports in concrete. The awning is finished in a light blue color.J. W. Shunklin of Mexico City and E. B. Rogers of the Panhandle are here buying mules to use on their sugar plantation. They have purchased a nice bunch in this county.
H. R. Fawkes and family spent the holidays with relatives and friends in Weatherford and Fort Worth. Mr. Fawkes is connected with the Federal Live Stock Sanitary Commission and has been located in the county for several weeks.

John Lewis of High Rolls, N. M., native of San Saba county and the son of Mrs. Becky Lewis, was the winner of a raffle sponsored by the Lions Club of Alamogordo, N. M., recently. For one $10.00 chance he was the holder of the number drawn for a new 4-door sport model, hard top Oldsmobile.
Miss Gertrude Hill, who had been employed for the past 34 years as a clerk in the San Saba post office, has retired effect Jan. 1, according to Postmaster W. E. Bryant.
Clifton Mack Johnson, GM-3, will sail from Yokosuka, Japan en route to the United States. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Penny Johnson of San Saba, he is serving aboard the aircraft carrier U. S. S. Boxer.
The girls’ basketball team from Fredericksburg poured 22 points through the basket in the third quarter here to overcome a slim lead held by the San Saba girls at the half, and went on to win the non-district tussle 51-44. Estelle Millican of San Saba sank 24 points for high scoring honors. Martha Terry scored 8 and Suzanne Gray 7.
Little Dustyn Wayne Benson is San Saba county’s Centennial baby, the first born in the county in 1956. The new year was only 80 minutes old when he arrived at San Saba Memorial Hospital, and weighed in at 7 pounds 8 ounces. The parents are Mr. and Mrs. Freddie Lee Benson. The father, a Navy veteran, is a native of Lampasas and the mother, nee Mary Nell Ivy, is a native of Lometa.
