Doris La Fond

Doris La Fond, 82, of Cherokee, Texas, passed away on August 10, 2023, after a long battle with dementia. Doris was born in McAllen, Texas, on July 13, 1941, to Mary Louise and Melvin Wolfe. She attended and graduated from McAllen High School in McAllen Texas.

Doris raised her three children: Charles, Gary, and Melissa in Baton Rouge before moving back to Texas in the 90's. She settled in Weslaco with her husband of 35 years, Lloyd 'Speedy' La Fond, and ran a successful dress shop called La Fond's Fashions. Doris eventually sold the shop and helped Speedy run a retirement park in Weslaco that was designed to be a haven for Winter Texans. After retirement, Doris and Speedy moved to Kingsland before eventually purchasing their own slice of heaven in Cherokee, Texas.

Doris was also a devoted member of the Cherokee Baptist Church for many years and enjoyed taking part in the numerous events hosted there. Doris' hobbies included traveling all over the country in their RV, reading, sewing, cross-stitching and was an amazing cook. She enjoyed socializing with friends, researching the genealogy of all her family members, and being “Meemaw” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Doris is survived by her loving husband, Lloyd 'Speedy' La Fond; son, Charles 'Chuck' Greer and his wife Paula; son-in law, Robbin Munson; and stepdaughter, Lisa Rial. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Kassidy, Kristina, Kathleen, Kevin, Thomas, Noah, and Hannah; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Melvin Wolfe; son, Gary Dale Greer; daughter, Melissa Greer Munson; stepson, Lawrence Joseph La Fond; and stepson-in-law, Thomas Loren Rial.

Memorial services will be held at Cherokee Baptist Church on August 17, 2023. Jarrod Beck will officiate. All those who know Doris are welcome to attend her service. A private interment to follow at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park in Burnet, Texas.
