I have made a list of things to do before I go to visit my granddaughter and family in Franklin, Tennessee, on Friday, February 4th. Writing this column for San Saba News is on the list for the February 10th edition. Today is the traditional Groundhog Day, February 2nd.

In January, the Hill Country Cattlewomen donated $100 gift cards from the Dutchman’s Meat Market in Fredericksburg to eight different food banks in the Hill Country area for the purchase of beef.

I have written before about what I believe to be the declining numbers of hardwood trees in the Hill Country. The evidence for this has been the fact that almost everywhere I go I see rather obvious browselines with little or no vegetation (except for cedar) below about four or five feet.
