Dillos lose to Johnson City in a Shootout

The Armadillos (1-2) suffered their second straight loss last Friday night to the Johnson City Eagles (2-1) 34-56. What started out as a promising night turned quickly on the Dillos. San Saba scored on the opening drive only to see the offense turn the ball over on the next three series that led to Johnson City scores. The Dillos never could make up the difference after going down 28 to seven after the first quarter. San Saba will be hosting the Eldorado Eagles next Friday at Rogan Field; it will be homecoming night for the Armadillos as they look to get back to the .500 mark before district play starts.

Offensive leaders –

Ethan Gonzales was the work horse for the Dillos once again. Gonzales rushed for 218 yards on 29 carries (7.5 avg) and scored three times on the ground. Gonzales also picked up 53 receiving yards on four catches. Winton Lackey started the game at quarterback and had six carries for 19 yards (3.1 avg) and completed three of eight passing attempts for 76 yards (25.3 avg) and had one touchdown and one interception. Miller finished the second half at quarterback and was five of eight passing (62%) with one touchdown and one interception. Miller also rushed for 78 yards on six carries (13 avg) and scored once. Skylar Ramero had one catch that went 68 yards for a score.

Defensive leaders –

Safety Levi Glover had a big night on the defensive side of the ball. Glover registered 21 tackles and recovered his third fumble in three games. Sterling Proffitt had eight tackles from the outside linebacker position while Alex Estrada recorded eight tackles from the inside linebacker spot. Other defensive highlights were Alex Aguirre with seven tackles followed by Juan Patino and Aidrian Martinez with four tackles each. Julius Salinas contributed to the defensive side with a fumble recovery on a punt.

10:21 – The Dillos strike first when Lackey connects with Romero on a 68-yard passing touchdown. PAT is good. 7-0 San Saba.

7:51 – The Eagles match the Dillos on their opening drive when they score on a 37-yard quarterback scramble. PAT is good. 7-7.

3:50 – Coming off a muffed punt by San Saba, Johnson City strikes quick on an eight-yard passing score. PAT is good. 14-7 Johnson City.

2:47 – Johnson City picks up another quick six points on fumbled “scoop and score.” PAT is good. 21-7 Johnson City.

:10 – The Eagles fourth score in the quarter comes way on a 38-yard pass. PAT is good. 28-7 Johnson City.

9:09 – Following a Gonzales seventy-yard dash to the two, Ethan barrels into the end zone for the score. PAT is good 14-28 Johnson City.

4:34 – The Eagles march the ball to the four-yard line and score on a quarterback keeper. PAT is good 35-14 Johnson City.

1:39 – The Dillos score late in the second when Gonzales crosses the goal line from nine yards out. PAT is no good 35-20 Johnson City.

:59 – Johnson City caps off the first half scoring on a thirteen-yard pass. PAT is good 42-20 Johnson City.

7:43 – Dillos recover the onside kick and move the ball to the three-yard line. Miller dives in for his first score of the night. Two-point conversion in good. 28-42 Johnson City.

11:46 – Another big run by Gonzales takes the Dillos to the two-yard line, from there he carries the ball in for the score. PAT is no good, San Saba 34 Johnson City 49.

7:30 – The Eagles end all hopes of a comeback as they drive the ball to the two-yard line and score. PAT is good, San Saba 34 Johnson City 56.
