Dillos open the season with a Win

The Armadillo football squad traveled to Killeen’s Leo Buckley Stadium and defeated the Florence Buffaloes soundly, 40-3. San Saba put up 408 total yards of offense with 365 of it from the ground. The Dillos really didn’t need to “open up” in the air as they were pretty successful running the ball and averaged 8.2 yards per carry. San Saba’s defense kept the Buffaloes slot T in check as the only score came from a 25yard field goal midway through the 2nd quarter. Next Friday, the Dillos start a four-game home stretch at Rogan Field when they take on the Junction Eagles.

Offensive Leaders –

Senior RB Ethan Gonzales and QB Lane Miller lead the way for the Dillos. Gonzales rushed for 133 yards on 18 carries (7.3 average) and two rushing touchdowns. Miller ran for two scores while rushing for 122 yards on 13 carries (9.3 avg). Miller also connected with Gonzales in the air for a score. Other contributors to the offense were Sophomore Trace Temples (4 rushes 35 yards), and Junior Alex Estrada (8 rushes 63 yards and a score). Juniors Levi Glover and Haiden VanBibber added to the team effort with one catch and one rushing attempt. Junior Alex Estrada was 4 of 5 on extra points.

Defensive Leaders –

Junior LB Winton Lackey anchored the defense with 15 tackles and a fumble recovery followed by Sophomore Sterling Proffitt with 8 tackles and a sack. Glover was all over the field as he had 7 tackles, caused two fumbles and a fumble recovery. Sophomores Ethan Kilman and Julius Salinas held down the defensive front with four and five tackles each. The defense performed well with several young players suiting up on the varsity level for the first time. Of the eight possessions the Buffaloes had, six ended in punts and two series ended on turnovers.

Game Recap 1st Quarter

9:01 – San Saba’s 51-yard opening drive ended when Miller found the end zone on a 5-yard scamper. PAT was good; 7-0 San Saba.

5:17 – RB Gonzales crossed the goal line for the 1st time this year on a 15-yard rushing score. PAT is no good; 13-0 San Saba.

At the end of the 1st quarter – San Saba 13, Florence 0

2nd Quarter

11:33 – The Dillos drive the ball down to the 5-yard line. From there, Gonzales picks up his 2nd rushing touchdown of the evening. Two-point conversion is no good; 19-0 San Saba.

:48 – The Buffaloes lone score comes way of a 25-yard field goal. San Saba 19, Florence 3 Halftime Score – San Saba 19, Florence 3

3rd Quarter

9:30 – On 3rd down from the 40-yard line, Miller connects with Gonzales on a 60-yard screen pass for the score. PAT is good; 26-3 San Saba.

1:16 – San Saba’s offense puts together another nice 60-yard drive that ends in a score when Miller barrels his way into the end zone from the 10-yard line. PAT is good; 33-3 San Saba.

4th Quarter

8:00 – RB Estrada caps off the scoring when the Dillos move the ball down to the 4-yard line; From there, Estrada muscled his way in for the score. PAT is good 40-3; San Saba Final Score – San Saba 40, Florence 3
