The Armadillo football team opened up district play with a 32-28 win over the Hamilton Bulldogs who were favored to win the game by 17 points. The win puts the Dillos 1-0 in district play, and they will look to keep their momentum going when they travel to Coleman to take on the Bluecats next Friday night. San Saba put together a solid performance on both sides of the ball as the defense created three turnovers and held the line of scrimmage three times on fourth down. On the offensive side, the Dillos produced 393 yards of total offense, 302 yards of that came on the ground. Ball control was a major factor in the win as San Saba held possession of the ball for 10:54 during the third quarter that limited the Bulldogs opportunities to score in the second half.

Offensive leaders

Once again it was the senior leadership of running back Ethan Gonzales and quarterback Lane Miller carrying the load for the Armadillo offense. Gonzales rushed for 215 yards on 33 carries (6.5 avg) with three rushing touchdowns. Miller carried the ball 18 times for 87 yards (4.8 avg) and completed six of nine passes (66%) for 61 yards. Skylar Romero had two receptions for 43 yards (21.5 avg), and Levi Glover hauled in three passes for 18 yards.

Defensive leaders

Levi Glover was the defensive stat leader on the evening. Glover had 12 tackles, two of those for a loss and a forced fumble. Winton Lackey and Juan Patino recorded nine tackles each, followed byAlex Estrada with seven tackles and Logan McMahan with five. Sterling Proffitt picked off his first pass of the year to save a touchdown, and Skylar Romero recorded his second interception of the season.

1st Quarter –

6:52 – Hamilton’s quarterback pulls off a “Hail Mary” pass on 4th and 21 from the 30-yard line for the score. PAT is no good. 6-0 Hamilton.

4:24 – San Saba’s answer to Hamilton’s score comes on a long drive that ends when Lane Miller dives into the end zone on a QB sneak. PAT is no good. 6-6.

2:38 – After a Hamilton punt that is downed on the 20-yard line, Gonzales dashes through the middle of the defense and scores on an 80-yard rush.Two-point conversion is no good. 12-6 San Saba.

After the end of one quarter of play, San Saba 12 – Hamilton 6.

2nd Quarter –

5:58 – Coming off a fourth down stop by the Dillos defense, San Saba moves the ball down to the three-yard line. From there, Gonzales finds the end zone. PAT is good. 19-6 San Saba.

3nd Quarter –

7:30 – San Saba’s opening drive of the half ends as Gonzales finds the end zone on a 35-yard run. Two-point conversion is no good. 25-6 San Saba.

6:12 – Hamilton fires back quick as their quarterback scrambles 48 yards for the score. Twopoint conversion is good. 25-14 San Saba.

:18 – San Saba ends a six-minute drive when they move the ball to the three-yard line. Miller ducks into the endzone for the score. PAT is good. 32-14 San Saba.

After three quarters of play: San Saba 32, Hamilton 14 4th Quarter- 8:19 – Hamilton puts together a long drive that goes to the San Saba seven-yard line; the bulldogs run a QB sneak in for the score. Two-point conversion is good. 32-20 San Saba.

:43 – After a San Saba punt, Hamilton’s QB once again scampers to the end zone from 60 yards out to make it a one possession ball game. Two-point conversion is good. 32-28 San Saba.

:43 – San Saba seals the victory when Levi Glover falls on the onside kick.

Final score: San Saba 32, Hamilton 28
