Words are very important. We speak words to those we are around daily. Sometimes we speak too many words. More than once my wife has said to me, “Don’t talk!” This is usually when I have been teasing her. Let’s think about words for a few minutes.

First, words can be comforting. When someone loses a loved one, we speak comforting words to those who are the survivors. When someone has a problem that is very serious, we try to encourage them with our words as well as our action.

Second, we may speak harsh words. When we are upset about something or at someone, we may come out in an argumentative tone. Proverbs 15:1 states, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” When two people argue, then nothing can be resolved. Reasoning usually comes with calm discussion.

Third, words can hurt. When we say something belittling to another person, it hurts that person. If enough hurtful words are spoken, then a person could be handicapped for a lifetime. Instead of criticizing, why not offer positive words to your mate, your children, your co-workers, even your enemies. Then notice the change in them.

Fourth, words can sometimes be lies that are told. We lie to hide the truth. We lie to gain an advantage. We lie to make ourselves look good. Paul, inspired by God, stated, “Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one, of you with his neighbor, for we are members of one another.“ Ephesians 4:25

Fifth, words can be filthy. Curse words are spoken freely by many people today. Paul tells us in Ephesians 4:29, “Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.” No unwholesome word would include cursing. Years ago, someone said “when one speaks curse words it is because they do not have anything intelligent to say.”

We could probably give more examples, but I believe this gets the point across. The words we speak to others are important in the sight of God. And we are always in the sight of God.

One of the most important things we may remember, however, is what Jesus said in John 12:48, “He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day.” The most important words you will ever find spoken are found in the pages of the Holy Scriptures. We must hear what Jesus says and then do it. Are you speaking positive words? Are you listening to Jesus’ words? Let’s think before we speak to make sure God is pleased with us.
