Mother’s Day

Sunday is Mother’s Day. Let me say Happy Mother’s Day to all of those who have brought children in this world, and loved and provided for them. You are to be honored on this special day.

There are some mothers in the Bible who come to mind on this day. One of these is recorded in the Old Testament. Her name is Hannah. We see her at the temple pouring her heart out to God. She desperately desires a son and does the most important thing she can do—Pray. (1 Samuel 1:11)

She is praying, and the priest Eli sees her and thinks she is drunk. She informs him she is praying for a child. Eli tells her, “...Go in peace; and may the God of Israel grant your petition that you have asked of Him.” (1 Samuel 1:17)

But she also did something else—she Promised. She made a promise that if God would give her a child, she would give him to the Lord. There are times we want something so bad that we make a promise to someone or even God, and when it happens, we do not keep that promise. Hannah was not like this. She had a child, a son. His name was Samuel. He was given to the Lord and served as a prophet, priest and the last judge of Israel. There are two books who bear his name.

Something else that Hannah did was— Provide for Samuel (1 Samuel 2:19). Every year she would go to the temple where Samuel lived and would take him a robe she had prepared for him. These are just a few of the things I see when I read about this godly woman. God blessed her with other children after the birth of this son.

Today, we need mothers who will pray for their children no matter their age. She needs to pray for their health, safety, and for their souls that they will be saved and ready when Jesus returns again in the sky to take the church home.

We need mothers who will promise them to God and then do everything in their ability to keep that promise, to set the godly example day in and day out.

And we need mothers who will provide for their children, mothers who will make sure they have the things in life that they need. Children need to be taught of God. They need to learn to worship and pray to God and put their trust in Him. They need to learn manners and to be a woman that God is pleased with. Teaching about God today in some homes does not take place, sadly.

So I wish a happy Mother’s Day to all mothers, and thank you for your example, love, and all you do for your children. You are special!
