Trusting God

They gathered together on the field of competition. One of them was much bigger than the other and thought that the advantage would go to him and his followers. The other had no doubt in his mind that he could defeat this huge being. The battle did not last long. David slung one stone at Goliath and he crumbled before him. He then beheaded the giant and Israel won a great victory this day. (1 Samuel 17)

The reason that David was so confident against a nine-foot giant was because he knew he had God on his side. The scripture states in Matthew 19:26, “But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (NASB). David was confident of the victory because he knew God.

God was present in his life and he had a close relationship with Him. While tending sheep, he killed a bear and a lion that were attacking the fold (1 Samuel 17:34-36). And now this giant was just another obstacle that David knew God would take care of. And He did.

David put one stone in his sling and it struck the giant on the only unguarded place where his armor would not help him. Either David was an excellent shot or God was with him and directed that stone. I think it was probably the latter.

In our lives, sometimes we have an obstacle that hinders us from doing the things that we should. We may think the task is too big, too daunting, too strenuous. And without God it is. There are times that we decide to try to do things for ourselves. When we fail we get frustrated. We get irritated. We fume! How many times have we left God out of the picture and try to do it without His help? Too many, I’m afraid. God wants each one of us to turn to Him and obey His word.

David was not a perfect person. Only Jesus has lived in the flesh and never sinned. Later, when David became king, he would commit adultery and have Bathsheba’s husband murdered (2 Samuel 11). David tried to hide all of this, but none of us can hide anything from God. When Nathan the prophet told him what he had done, he came clean before God, repented of his sin, and was forgiven by the Lord.

Today, we must believe that God can do the impossible. He has shown us this by creating the world we live in and sustaining the orb we all call home in this life. Do you believe God can do the impossible? Are you trying to please God by living for Him? Seek God and His ways today. If you draw close to Him, He will draw close to you (James 4:8). Repent of past sins and let God lead you. Confess Him and be baptized for the forgiveness of your sins. Then God will be with you and help you. We all need to draw closer to Him who made us and loves us.
