Simple Truths

Matther 2:1, 2 “Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2. Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.”

On Christmas, we don’t worship a day, a tree, the lights, the gifts, or the festivities, but we worship the Saviour who was born on a specific day, and, no one knows the day but God. We do know he was born according to John 1:14 “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” And we find in 1 Timothy 3:16 “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.”

There are those who would downplay Christmas with the fact that believers of the past never celebrated the birth of Christ, and yet, I find in the Bible that at the birth of Christ the angels rejoiced and celebrated his birth, the shepherds ran to see and celebrated his birth, and wise men came from a great distance to celebrate and worship him at his birth. I certainly believe that the birth of Christ was, and is a very important time. We may not know the exact day when Christ was born, but that does not negate its importance. The angel declared to the shepherds in Luke 2 “Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” The angel declared the attitude toward his birth; “good tidings of great joy,” the perimeters of his birth; “which shall be to all people,” the purpose of his birth; “a Saviour,” and the person of his birth: “which is Christ the Lord.”

The birth of Christ is a time to honor and glorify the Lord by praise and worship; Luke 2:13, 14 “And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.” It is also a time of sharing the gospel with others; vs 17 “And when they had seen it, they made known the saying which was told them concerning this child.”

His birth is the most important birth in all the history of mankind. There is more gospel preached about his birth, more songs sung about his birth, more Bible stories told about his birth, more nativity scenes displayed at Christmas time symbolizing his birth, more lights pointing toward the manger scene, more giving and sharing with others, more family gatherings, and more candle light services held than any other time of the year.

Maybe not everyone recognizes Christ at Christmas, but thank God for all the symbols of Christ and his birth at this wonderful time of year. Christ still gets honor in spite of the nay sayers, and all the wicked that goes on during this time. Jesus is the reason for the season, and without Him, there would be no Christmas and no Saviour. It’s all about Him. Merry Christmas!
