For its final meeting of the 2022-23 year, 20 members of the San Saba Garden Club (SSGC) met for brunch at the home of Keith and Debbie Shahan. Hostesses for the event were members of the Entertainment Committee: Marjean Alexander (chair), Rebecca Britton, Dianna Furlan, Sandra McCrary, and Karen Sloan.

Utilizing the Garden Club’s hands-on affiliation with Nature, Dianna Furlan created artistic flower arrangements using a mix of cultivated blooms, wildflowers, and roadside greenery. A cascading bouquet graced the buffet table and a boxed spray sat just above the beverage station; small vases of wildflowers brightened patio tables. The Shahans’ groomed yard, nestled against an expanse of undeveloped countryside, provided the perfect ambience for a relaxing and intimate gathering.

Attendees chose from a variety of homemade dishes: savory egg casserole, pecancrusted sausage balls, glazed orange Bundt cake, sourdough cinnamon rolls, cranberry pecan scones, and strawberries Romanoff. Choice of beverages included orange juice, cranberry juice, and mimosas.

President Debbie Shahan conducted a brief business meeting before the group adjourned. She announced that the current slate of officers had agreed to continue their posts for an additional term: Debbie Shahan, President; Jacqueline Carlson, Vice President; Janis Bates, Corresponding and Recording Secretary; Marjean Alexander, Treasurer; Dianna Furlan, Parliamentarian and Historian; Karen Sloan, Reporter. Committee reports followed the group’s recitation of the club collect and creed. Dianna Furlan recounted the success of the biennial garage sale, Rhonda Killion reviewed flowerbed cleanup/planting at the clubhouse, and Susan Kisko discussed possible projects for the Therapy Committee. SSGC summer activities include ongoing maintenance of the keyhole garden at the local nursing home and the continuation of Nature Kamp, now in its eighth year leading approximately 50 children in learning about nature and conservation. In June, San Saba will co-host the Texas Garden Club District V Summer Workshop with Mason Garden Club. Approximately 60 are expected to attend.

San Saba Garden Club is a civic-minded, environmentally conscientious organization with a focus on beautifying residences, communities, and our town through gardening. It has been in continuous existence for over 85 years and welcomes new members who share its creed to “make this a more beautiful place to live” by actively promoting “trees and grass instead of ash heaps and tin cans. Flowers instead of weeds.” Regular club meetings will resume in September. If you are interested in joining or learning more about SSGC, please contact Debbie Shahan at dfshahan@centex.net.
