The Pierian Study Club met for their monthly meeting at the San Saba Hotel. The Contact Committee, composed of Becky Whitley, Chairman, Sandy Smith, Trish Warren and Sandy Kuykendall, were hostesses for the event. Debbie Shahan and Audrey Smith assisted in the absence of Becky and Sandy.

The program was presented by Kristen Millican from Millican Pecan Company. Kristen shared some of the history of Millican Pecan. Millican Pecan Company was developed following the patriarch E.E. Risien’s founding of the West Texas Pecan Nursery. The company developed most of the more notable varieties of paper shell pecans including the: San Saba Improved, Texas Prolific, Onliwon, Squirrel Delight and Western Schley. So many varieties were developed here, this part of Texas became known as the “Pecan Capital of the World.”

Kristen married Winston Millican in 2003 and moved back to San Saba to establish their family. They combined Winston’s experience in farming and all aspects of pecans with Kristen’s love for cooking, and Millican Pecan was added to a family business history that spans five generations.

Refreshment were furnished by Kristen and featured some of the company’s delicious candies. These included pecan tassies, a milk chocolate carmamillicans and a white chocolate pecan cluster.
