I have been working on our bank statements and receipts to take them to our good, longtime friend and CPA who finishes our tax returns. I do not think anyone enjoys sitting down and doing their tax returns unless they are an accountant. You know, I could be fishing or golfing instead.
I remember a wealthy surgeon who told me he didn’t file tax returns because there is a clause in our laws that allows us to not pay taxes. He did not file for five years and ended up losing everything, a fugitive from justice, and had to flee to Canada to escape prison. Taxes are not new and have been around almost forever. Thinking about paying taxes reminds me of something in the Bible.
Jesus was asked the question was it lawful to pay taxes or not. His answer was pay taxes to whom they are due (Luke 20:22, 25). He also talked about not just paying taxes but giving respect, custom, fear and honor to all the governing authorities (Romans 13:6, 7). And it says they are servants of God. They may be scoundrels, but we can honor the office they hold!
The Bible says we are to do all things without grumbling (uh oh, I may be in trouble!) Philippians 2:14-16. And then, IN ALL THINGS, whatever we do, do it for the honor and glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31, 33). See you in Church next Sunday.
