Ladies of the San Saba Garden Club donned their gardening hats, spades, clippers, trowels, hoes, rakes, and gloves Tuesday morning, October 6th, ready to work in their gardening spaces in Mill Pond Park around the historic old mill clubhouse. In the welcoming fall weather everyone was excited to begin sprucing up the clubhouse grounds.
Facing the front of the clubhouse is a heart shaped flower bed holding an Arizona Ash tree and hardy native plants. The bed was constructed in the 1950s honoring members’dedication and service to the club. Members throughout the years have tended to the bed and replaced the bordering rocks to protect it. Ducks lay their eggs in the mulch, pollinators frequent the plant blooms, and birds find a resting spot in the tree limbs, so it’s a favorite place of our nature loving group. We cleaned it up nicely preparing for the rock edge repair the San Saba Parks Department will do for us soon.
Two hours time was spent laying soil, mulch, and uncovering plants for the new season while also pruning and deadheading established plants and shrubs, and raking leaves along with debris around the yard. Many plans were being made for the time coming when we will be holding meetings inside the cherished clubhouse again. While workers are preparing the new cabinets, lighting and electricity, restroom, and closet inside, members are planning for a “celebration of renovation” for 2027! News of the event will be coming in the near future.
A picnic lunch at the park gazebo and business meeting were held at noon with Laurie Fleet and Debbie Shahan serving as hostesses. Cindy Sloan and Marjean Alexander opened the meeting with fifteen members and three guests, Linda Mahaffey, Kathleen Hawkins, and Pearl Gunter present. Committees were called upon to give their reports for the month and status of work on the building given. Fellowship and encouraging words were shared by all and thanks given to the First Presbyterian Church for the use of their building. Next month’s meeting will be a program given by member, Laurie Fleet, on Medicinal Herbs. Come join us at 2p.m. on Tuesday, November 3rd, and learn which herbs to grow for health and daily living!
