One third of 7th – 12th graders participate in the San Saba Band, and more than half participate in athletics. Why are extracurricular activities important?
Research shows that student participation is associated with better attendance, academic achievement, and aspirations of continued training beyond high school. Extracurricular activities also teach teamwork, group and individual responsibility, and learning from competition.
Although we can’t say what our kids will become, cnbc. com ran an article noting that the majority of Corporate Executive Officers (CEOs) played high school sports (in women the percentage was 90%!). Additionally, many studies show that high school students who played a musical instrument scored better in math, science and English than their nonmusical peers.
In providing more capability to host/plan for extracurricular activities (athletics, cheer/ dance, fine arts/music), the improvements proposed in the May 7th bond election will have a direct impact on the majority of San Saba ISD’s students, if approved.
Reminder on important dates:
1. Early voting – 4/25 through 5/3.
2. Election day – 5/7.
