Happy Herman's Hideaway

Which came first…the chicken or the egg

Hello there, my San Saba sweethearts. We will soon be saying goodbye to the month of January. Time seems to be such an ethereal thing and yet some days at my house seem to be snail like and move as if time stands still. Yeah, there are days I look at mom and ask if she has taken stop action pictures of our days! She always has the same answer…“Herman, you are just bored; go find something to do.” Here is my complaint, however, when I do, she gets all upset and tells me not to get in trouble! I tell you, sometimes there is just no satisfying parentals!

You know what? I miss my toys! I haven’t seen them in such a long time. I haven’t squeaked anything, played fetch with dad or chewed on anything other than food in forever! Mom said as soon as Dr. Adam says my tooth has rooted properly, I will be able to have all my toys back, and maybe by the time you are reading this I will have all my toys back. I may even have my Christmas present…I certainly hope so! A dachshund with nothing to divert his attention can be very dangerous don’t you know.

I told mom I would like to learn a foreign language. She laughed and told me I already speak one. I looked at her quite confused and asked her what language would that be, and she told me I spoke flibbertigibbet nonsense. Well let me tell you, I was so insulted! I happen to consider myself a dachshund sage, and I am not speaking of the seasoning! I happen to think I offer a certain dachshund dog intelligence, forward thinking and unconditional love in my assessment of life. I would aver there are few humans on earth who are like dogs. You may ask what makes me think I know these things. Well I shall tell you…when mom insulted me…I gave her a hug and the most loving kisses! It is just my way!

What do you think would be better, to have a dozen eggs or a chicken? I asked mom, and she gave it a thought. She said…“Well, if we had a chicken, we would have to build a cage, buy it food, have a rooster so we could have eggs, but if we had all that we could certainly have more than a dozen eggs. Such withstanding, Herman, do you remember when our neighbors had those chickens? Do you remember the horrible smell, how we never got any sleep and all the mess they made? Actually Herman, I think it is easier to go to the store and buy a dozen eggs. I looked at mom, shook my dachshund head and said…“Mom, you are a definitely an O.C.D. wimp!”

Mom told me that this March, mom and dad will have lived in San Saba for 15 years. I have visited the Houston area where they used to live, and it is like a different planet. There are huge buildings, stores everywhere, enormous houses, freeways, and more people than anyone can count. Our Shawn’s house could fit like two and a half of our houses in it! It has a downstairs and an upstairs, a swimming pool, and is so beautiful. All that being said, what the Houston area is lacking is a sense of home, a sense of calm, serenity, a real hometown, neighborhood feel. San Saba has become the heart of the parentals. It has become their soul and their place of comfort and solace. We love you, my San Saba sweethearts, and thank you for being!
