Happy Herman's Hideaway

Haircuts and Hope

Hello, my San Saba darlings, and how have you been? Did you have to get your sweaters back out of your closets to keep warm because of Mother Nature’s insanity? I get a bit irritated because I have to wait for dad to wrap himself up like a burrito before he takes me outside, and the entire time I am dancing at the door trying not to make a mess!

One good thing about the weather this week was the lovely rain we got. I also got rained on in the form of a bath. I have to say dad seems to be obsessed over my hair. He is once again talking about how long it is getting and mouthing off about taking me to the groomer. Mom loves my furry look, thinks my fluffy face is absolutely adorable, but dad does nothing but complain about it. I tell you, my San Saba loves, it makes me want to ask him why he ever wanted to have a wire-haired dachshund, and perhaps he should have opted for a hairless dog of some sort! Yeah, maybe a dog that was more like his twin would have better suited him. There is something dad and everyone needs to learn about dachshunds: we are who we are, and no matter how anyone tries to change us, it just will not happen. I mean just think about it…he has all my hair cut off and I just grow it all back!

Mom and I were talking the other day, and she said back when she was growing up children spent time outside playing in the yard all day. There were games such as Red Rover, Freeze Tag, Hide and Seek and Red Light/Green Light. Mom told me she would ride her bike all over the neighborhood, and believe it or not, children even walked to and from school. All the neighborhood kids were more like brothers and sisters to one another…that’s how close the families were in the neighborhood. Mom’s stories made me feel sad because it sure isn’t the same America I read about on my newsfeed…not with all mass shootings. When did human beings change? When did they begin hating everyone and themselves so much? I am a dachshund and I see the world from only inches from the ground, and yet my ability to love reaches higher than sky. Yes, it is unconditional. I am a furry ball of pure joy, and it is such a simple thing to be because once you start, it is a self-replenishing thing. I love you, my San Saba friends, so very much. I hope you have a wonderful week until next we speak, and thank you for being.
