40 Years Ago January 6, 1983

Two members of the 1982 San Saba Armadillo football team, running back John Henry and offensive lineman Marcus Hector, were recently named to the 'West Texas Super Team' by the San Angelo Standard-Times sports writers. Henry and Hector, both seniors, and teammate Phillip Clark were also named to the 'Central Texas Super Team,' according to the Brownwood Bulletin.

Jo Ann Tally is glad to be back home from New Mexico after spending a very nice Christmas with their parents and her children. There was quite a bit of snow while she was home, with Ruidoso and Cloudcroft in the mountains there getting 24' of new white stuff the day after Christmas.

D-n-D T-Shirt and Athletic Shop and the Circle D Fried Chicken and Pizza restaurant will open on Wallace street. Larry and Charlene Daniel will operate both businesses under one roof in the new log cabin across from the high school building.

We all wish happy retirement to Mack Daugherty who worked his last day as postmaster here in Cherokee. Mack worked 21 years at the job. Lois Boultinghouse is the postmistress now. She has helped as relief for several years.

New in San Saba a lawyer, historian and a runner. New resident of San Saba, Elwin Lomax Hamilton, 48, is all three. He is a new lawyer at the firm of Senterfitt and Childress law offices.

The long arm of the law has been consolidated in San Saba. Sheriff Brantley Barker said it was not going to be an easy task, but he and his deputies took on the additional role of policing the city of San Saba as of midnight. The disbanding of the police department and the consolidation with the county sheriff for a two year trail period, was sparked by the resignation of city Police Chief Rex Fleming.

The San Saba Armadillos hosted Mason in their last game before the Christmas break. The Dillos outscored Mason in each quarter winning the game 70-28. Everyone on the team contributed offensively with Kelan Verette-17 points, Luis Vega-16 points and Aaron Perez-13 points, leading the scoring for the Dillos. Others scoring were: Ryan Guidroz-7 points, Isaac Zepeda-5 points, Kolton Ellis-3 points, Garrett Welch-2 points and Caelob Hardman-2 points.

We can always hope for rain next year. It was learned that the San Saba ISD is about to build a Science Center adjacent to the high school and the center will be named 'The George Dennis Science Center.' What a compliment to George Dennis, who has taught school for 55 years, 50 of those in San Saba. He is truly deserving!

Introducing Mr. Orban Moorehead. Each month San Saba Senior Center selects one outstanding Super Senior who displays friendliness, dedication to the center and actively participates within the group During the recent Commissioners Court, Judge Theodosis reported that County officials will be 'sworn in' sometime this week to start their duties January 1st. The Judge also reported that the County Appraiser, Randy Henderson, has resigned and the Appraisal District will be hiring a replacement.

2012 marked the 40th wedding anniversary of Rick and Susana Lambert. The couple was honored by family and friends, with a reception and lunch after Mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church, where they were married in 1972. They have three sons and six grandchildren and reside happily in San Saba.

After two rounds of cowhorse, pleasure, reining, and trail competitions, Roy Fischer earned the title, Western Horseman World Stock Horse of Texas Novice Champion for 2012. He was presented a buckle and a plaque for his recognition. Also, after 11 shows, Roy is the Stock Horse of Texas Novice Champion for 2012.

Commercial National Bank gave away cash and toys this Christmas season. Winners of Santa's bag of toys were Elik Gomez, son of Kassy and Damion Gomez and Emerson Gage, daughter of Jordan Gage and Madison Kruger. Albert Fry won the final $100 cash prize.
