San Saba Youth Sports Association (SSYSA) has hosted two summer events so far this season. The first event was the 2nd Annual Sports camp fundraiser event. During this 4-day camp, athletes from 1st through 6th grade experience numerous sports and team-building activities. This year's line up included coed flag football, coed basketball, coed soccer, softball, and baseball. The hope of the camp is to expose the youth to sports they normally don't play and spark an interest to participate during the regular season. The proceeds from this fundraising camp currently benefit the continued creation of a sports complex (fields near the nursing home). This year's camp boasted 56 campers, raising around $4000 for SSYSA.
The very next week, a complimentary basketball camp was held for any youth interested. This camp was three evening sessions focussed intensely on fundamentals such as ball handling, shooting form, defensive footwork and body positioning, and a competitors mindset. The athletes in attendance worked incredibly hard, and coaches saw great improvements from so many. We are so excited to say that we also had a good number of athletes attend who have not played basketball before. The hope of our organization is to grow the future of San Saba Athletics, and so new faces are incredibly exciting. This camp boasted 63 basketball players ranging in age from 1st grade to 6th grade, and we hope to see each of them again in the regular season.
Please be on the lookout for camps offered by San Saba Varsity Athletics coaches and maybe more from SSYSA in the future! If our athletes today continue to strive to be their best, we know we will watch them chasing gold balls in their future. Go Dillos!
