San Saba Track and Field impresses at Regionals

The San Saba High School girls and boys varsity track and field teams competed very well on April 23-24 during the 2A Region IV Championships held at Javelina Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

In what continues to be a stellar 2021 season for the Dillos, the boys 4x200-meter relay team was able to qualify for the upcoming state meet with a thrilling race this past Saturday placing as the runner-up with a superb time of 1:31.68 to just beat out third-place Refugio High School.

The 4x200-meter relay team will represent San Saba at state with the foursome of Logan Glover, Stone Sears, Justin Yarbrough, and Wesley Lackey.

Individually for the girls, the Lady Dillos had Brighton Adams qualify for the state meet by winning two separate running events at regionals: victorious in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.65 seconds and another win in the 800-meter run at 2:24.36.

San Saba standout student-athlete Courtnee Cash finished a remarkable career as a multisport athlete for the Lady Dillos as she placed third in the 200-meter dash (26.48 seconds) and fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.75 seconds. Cash also placed fourth in the long jump and sixth in the triple jump, while Lexy Amthor finished 14th in the high jump.

The Lady Dillos, who had the 100-meter relay team qualify for regionals, finished a great season in eighth place with a time of 52.19 seconds. The foursome was represented by Cash, Amthor, Landri Glover, and Leslie Aguirre.

As for the boys individually, the Dillos had multiple athletes place highly in their respective running events to cap off a very memorable 2021 season at regionals. Lackey placed seventh in a highly competitive 100-meter dash at 11.60 seconds, Glover placing eighth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.39, and Tyler Johnson placing 11th in the 300-meter hurdles with a mark of 46.15 seconds.

The boys also had three athletes do well in their respective field events: Landin Short in sixth at 42’08.75” in the shot put, Sears in sixth at 22’00.75” in the long jump, and Reagan Mejia in eighth place with a mark of 5’08.00” in the high jump.

The upcoming UIL 2A State Championship meet will be on Friday, May 7, at Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas at Austin.
