San Saba Boys Powerlifting astounds in First Place at Regionals

The San Saba High School boys’ varsity powerlifting squad had a sensational outing as a team on Thursday, March 11, when the Dillos placed first amongst 21 schools at the 2021 Region 2 Division 3 Championship hosted by West High School.

With a whopping 11 lifters medal by placing in fifth place or higher in their respective weight classes, the Dillos’ 49 points were good enough to edge out the likes of Bosqueville High School with 38, Bruceville-Eddy High School with 24, Coleman High School with 23, and Miles High School with 17 points.

Four Dillos lifters placed first in their respective weight classes.

Brenden Peel in the 132-pound class with a total of 835 pounds lifted: 325 on the squat, 175 on the bench press, and 335 on the deadlift.

Gilberto Baez in the 165-pound class with a total of

1,375 pounds lifted: 515 on the squat, 275 on the bench press, and 585 pounds on the deadlift.

Landon Yarbrough in the 198-pound class with a total of 1,065 pounds lifted: 400 on the squat, 260 on the bench press, and 405 pounds on the deadlift.

Landin Short in the 220-pound class with the second-most weight lifted of all competitors with a whopping 1,485 pounds lifted: 535 on the squat, 350 on the bench press, and 600 pounds on the deadlift.

San Saba boys varsity powerlifting will take part in the upcoming state championship meet held on Saturday, March 27, at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.
