The San Saba High School varsity baseball and softball teams won a district game this past week as both the Dillos and Lady Dillos wrap up their 2021 regular seasons.

San Saba Dillos 6, Center Point Pirates 3

In hopes of making the playoffs in District 29-2A this season, the Dillos varsity baseball squad picked up a crucial 6-3 victory at home on April 13 vs. Center Point High School. Following an RBI groundout by Wesley Lackey in the bottom of the first inning, the Dillos padded their lead to 5-0 by the end of the third inning. San Saba took advantage of some critical fielding errors by Center Point as two runs scored off a ball hit by Risien Shahan.

Although the Dillos added one more insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Logan Glover, both teams went quiet offensively until the top of the seventh inning. With the Dillos leading the Pirates 6-0, it was Center Point who finally got things going on offense with three runs in the frame to cut San Saba’s lead to just 6-3. However, with Glover on the mound in relief, the Dillos senior pitcher managed to slam the door shut late as he struck out the final Pirate batter looking to end the game.

The Dillos got a sensational outing from Mejia as the starting pitcher with 5.0 innings, eight strikeouts, only two hits allowed, zero walks, and zero runs surrendered.

San Saba will have three more regular-season games against District 29-2A opponents: April 21 at home vs. Mason High School, April 27 at home vs. Junction High School, and April 30 on the road at Harper High School.

San Saba Lady Dillos 6, Goldthwaite Lady Eagles 3

The San Saba varsity softball team returned home on Monday, April 19, and held on for an impressive 6-3 victory over District 28-2A foe Goldthwaite High School.

With the visiting Lady Eagles already up 2-0, the Lady Dillos closed the bottom of the first inning by taking the lead on a two-run triple by Aron Mack to go up 3-2.

Following a bases-loaded walk drawn by Goldthwaite in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game up at 3-3, San Saba took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame on an RBI groundout by Kynedi Isham. Mack would add two runs batted in to help pad the Lady Dillo lead over the Lady Eagles in the bottom of the fifth inning.

San Saba was propelled by excellent pitching from Abigail Jimenez, who struck out a whopping 11 Goldthwaite batters in 7.0 innings while only allowing three runs to cross the plate. Offensively, both Kim Butler and Caroline McHam had two hits apiece for San Saba while combining to score three of the team’s six runs.

The Lady Dillos will conclude their 2021 regular season at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 23, when San Saba travels to take on Medina High School.
