Last week, our junior high Indians football team played their last game of the season against Calvert. They secured the win with a final score of 48-35. They finished the year as District Champions! Our varsity team did not play this week due to a forfeit from Calvert. They will play Rochelle for the bi-district championship in Zephyr at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, November 15th. Good luck to our Indians!
Cherokee Schools celebrated local veterans with a Veterans Day Program the morning of November 11, 2024, organized by Cherokee Elementary GT students and facilitated by Elementary and Junior High GT students. The event was kicked off with an amazing breakfast for our local veterans in attendance. The breakfast was prepared and served by our Cherokee High School National Honor students. The PreK, Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students made time to learn “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and with the help of their teachers, paraded around the gym singing the song while carrying and waving American flags. This year’s guest speaker was Mrs. Aimee Shannon. Mrs. Shannon, currently a substitute teacher at Cherokee Schools, was once a member of the U.S. Air Force Reserves and is also a retired law enforcement officer. In Shannon’s speech, she encouraged students to begin thinking about a five-year future plan and to keep service in mind when planning for the future, whether it be serving in the military, law enforcement, community, school or family. She recognized several students and staff members for being great examples of servitude. Recognized were Addie Merriman, Phoebe Valdez, Brantley Shannon, Kyson Shanklin, Tatum Shanklin, Mrs.Shannon Padgett, Ms. Shandi Hall, and Mrs. Sherrie Kroll. Other recognitions during the program were the winners for the Veterans Day Art contests: winning the Veterans Day PK - 2nd grades Coloring contest was Miss Cara Sue Broyles and winning the Veterans Day 3rd 5th grades Freestyle Art contest was MissAddisyn Trinidad. Most importantly, thank you to all of our veterans near and far for your sacrifices!
The 3rd annual Wild Game Dinner took place over the weekend to benefit the San Saba County Livestock Association. Cherokee was proud to have so many of our students show up and work this big event. In addition to being present at the event, out Cherokee Ag classes made projects for the live auction. A custom deer blind brought $3,200 and a shooting table brought $1,300. Thank you also to the adults who made this event possible and continue to support our young people in the field of agriculture. Some upcoming events to take note of are as follows: there is a PTC meeting on November 18th at 4:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. College and Career Day will be on the 21st from 1-4 p.m. Thanksgiving break will be November 22 - 29th. UIL will be hosted here in Cherokee this year on December 6th. We need volunteers to help with this. If you are interested, please contact Susan Shannon.
Have a great week!
