News From Cherokee ISD

Last week was a great week at Cherokee ISD. It was spirit week, and the cheerleaders made a great plan to boost school spirit through dress up days. The fun outfits led to lots of excitement in the hallways.

Our junior high football team pleased the crowd with a win over Sidney with a score of 13-8.

Our varsity team was also victorious over Sidney with a final score of 60-14, ending the game early in the 3rd quarter.

Our homecoming festivities took place at half time.

Freshman Duchess was Aspen Graham who was escorted by Raymond Cossey. Sophomore Duchess was Hannah Simms. She was escorted by Weston Woolsey. Piper Meyer was Junior Class Duchess and was escorted by John Clark.

Homecoming queen nominees were Payton Hanley, escorted by her parents, Mickey and Coney Hanley; Lauren Roberson, escorted by Wade and Ginger Brooks; and Annie Rutledge, escorted by her grandparents, Rick and Debbie Duggar, and her parents.

Homecoming King nominees were Seth Lemaster, escorted by his mother, Rachel Lemaster; Joel Valdez, escorted by his parents, Israel and Valerie Valdez, and grandmother, Carmen Valdez; and Jeremiah Wakefield, escorted by his parents, Chris and Brandi Wakefield. Payton Hanley and Joel Valdez were crowned Homecoming Queen and King. Lauren Roberson was chosen as Football Sweetheart, and Weston Woolsey received the honor of Football Beau. Congratulations to our young people!

We also had a busy week with Rock Your School! This is an event held each year that challenges educators to create an out of the ordinary learning experience for their students. Teachers can participate at any level. This year, the theme was Rockin’ with Kindness. Students received kindness challenges all week long, and we are still seeing the effects of that this week. It was really heart warming to see our students being intentional about the way they treated others. Music, classroom transformations, decorations, games, and many other strategies were used to engage our students and get them excited about learning.

In other news, on Saturday, September 21, 2024, Emily Penney and Chris Oakman, two eighth grade FFA members, attended the Area VII Greenhand camp, which was held at La Vernia High School. A “Greenhand” is any eighth or ninth grade student who is participating in their first year of agricultural education. The camp is the first activity for them, and this is the only year they can participate in it.

The five-hour leadership camp was hosted by the Area VII FFA Officers and emphasizes team building, goal setting, introduction to the FFA and the various activities it has to offer, and plenty of opportunities to make new friends from across the state of Texas. They also attended a session given by the Texas FFA state president and the first vice president.

Emily Penney stated that “The best thing about Greenhand camp was getting to meet other FFA people and make connections in FFA” These students had such an amazing opportunity to learn how to be a leader, work with team members and become involved in the FFA. Cherokee FFA looks forward to seeing how much our Greenhands grow and succeed.

The annual fall festival sponsored by PTC is coming up on October 26th. We are accepting donations for our famous silent auction baskets. You can check your student’s class theme on our Facebook page or contact your child’s homeroom teacher or class sponsor for more information. Also, we would like to invite interested parties to participate in a trunk or treat directly after the festival.

Have a great week!
