The San Saba High School girls varsity basketball team improved to 2-0 in District 29-2A play and an impressive 14-4 overall this past week with district victories over rival Goldthwaite High School at home and Johnson City High School on the road.

In a very important district opener at home on Tuesday night, the Lady Dillos got off to a superb start in the first half with a 28- 12 lead in which they outscored the Lady Eagles 13-3 in the first quarter and 15-9 in the second quarter. Despite Goldthwaite being able to make a bit of a run in the third and early fourth quarter, San Saba completely took over the game down the stretch and was able to pull off a very impressive 48-27 victory. Junior forward Lexy Amthor led the way for the Lady Dillos with 12 points, while senior forwards Nojemi Martinez and Landri Glover added 11 and nine points on the night, respectively.

The Lady Dillos would then improve to 2-0 in district play on December 17 as they went on the road to dominate Johnson City 56-9. Under first-year head coach Chris Jost, San Saba suffocated the host Lady Eagles on defense throughout the night and held Johnson City to singledigit point totals. In a balanced offensive attack, Glover scored in double figures with 10 points. After a crucial home district game on December 21 against Harper High School, the Lady Dillos will head to Comanche High School on December 28-29 for a two-day tournament.

As for the Dillos boys varsity squad, San Saba continued non-district play on December 14 and picked up a solid 59-47 victory against nearby Lometa High School. The Dillos were propelled over the Hornets by a great one-two punch of San Saba senior guard Reagan Mejia and junior forward Dylan Ware.

Mejia again was hot from the field and led all scorers with 23 points, while Ware was a beast in the paint and added 16 points of his own. With the win, the Dillos stopped a three-game losing streak and improved their record to 7-5 this 2021-22 season. Under head coach Mark Kyle, San Saba will open its District 29-2A schedule on Tuesday night at home vs. Harper before competing on December 28-29 in the two-day Comanche Tournament.
