The San Saba High School girls and boys varsity basketball teams each went on the road on Tuesday, January 25, and picked up dominant victories against Harper High School.

San Saba Lady Dillos 44, Harper Lady Longhorns 27

In order for the Lady Dillos to stay at the top of the District 29-2A standings, they had to handle business in a tough road environment at Harper, and they did just that with an impressive 44-27 triumph over the Lady Longhorns.

This was an excellent display of team defense for the Lady Dillos for a majority of the game as San Saba jumped out to a 20-5 lead by the end ofs Indian Coyote the first quarter. The Lady Dillos led by as many as 28 points in the second half before Harper was able to make a bit of a rally in the fourth quarter to make the score appear closer than the game really was.

San Saba junior guard Lexy Amthor led the Lady Dillos in scoring on the night with 15 points, while senior center Nojemi Martinez also had herself a solid game with nine points in the pivotal victory over Harper.

Under first-year head coach Chris Jost, the Lady Dillos (24-6 overall and 8-1 in district play) will host winless Center Point High School on Tuesday night before traveling on Friday night to take on Junction High School. They will then host rival Mason High School at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, February 11, for Senior Night in a game that will likely determine the winner of District 29-2A.

San Saba Dillos 67, Harper Longhorns 36

The San Saba boys varsity squad put on a show last week with a 67-36 rout of Harper, which kept the Dillos right in the thick of the race for a District 29-2A championship.

With a 15-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Dillos extended that advantage to 34- 20 at halftime and continued to grow that margin even more in the second half of a dominating performance across the board.

San Saba standout senior guard Reagan Mejia added another superb performance to his resume with a game-high 22 points on the night, while freshman forward Levi Glover also scored in double figures with 13 points. Junior forward Noah Martinez had a solid game with nine points, while senior guard Drake Bryant scored eight points of his own for the Dillos in the win over the host Longhorns.

Although the Dillos (14-8 overall and 6-1 in district play) did not compete in a game this past Friday night, they got very favorable news come San Saba’s way as rival Goldthwaite High School was beaten soundly 38- 22 on the road at Mason High School. This currently puts the Dillos and Eagles in a potential tiebreaking first place scenario in the District 29-2A standings after the Eagles won the first meeting 52-48 in overtime back on January 18 in Goldthwaite.
