The 2020 San Saba High School girls’ and boys’ varsity cross country teams continued their stellar seasons on Monday, October 19 when the Lady Dillos and Dillos took part in the District 29-2A cross country meet held at San Saba River Golf Course in San Saba.

With a great team effort, the Lady Dillos came up just short as Mason High School’s 50 points edged the hosts’ 54 points to win the district meet as both schools qualified for the upcoming regional meet with state championship aspirations.

Goldthwaite High School finished third place as a team in the girls’ 3,200-meter run with 68 points, Harper High School in fourth with 80 points, Johnson City High School in fifth with 86 points, and Junction High School in sixth place with 190 points.

Individually for the girls, it was again the Lady Dillos’ senior duo of Brighton Adams and Courtnee Cash finishing at the top as Adams’ mark of 12:26.9 was good enough for first place by over 6.5 seconds, while Adams crossed the line in third place with a great time of 12:35.3.

Lady Dillos junior Nojemi Martinez put together a very strong performance of her own with a 10th-place finish at 13:23.5.

As for the boys, they too finished as the district runner-up with 50 points in second place behind Harper’s dominant effort with 26 points.

Rival Goldthwaite was right behind the Dillos for third place in the boys’ 5,000-meter run with 55 points, while Johnson City and Junction finished fourth and fifth in the team portion with 93 and 126 points, respectively.

San Saba freshman standout Julius Salinas, who had won the Lipan Indian Invitational the previous week on October 14, was up near the front of the pack at the district meet and finished in fourth place (18:56.8) with senior teammate Levi Brown (19:29.9) behind him in fifth place in a field of 35 runners.

The Dillos also had two more runners crack the top 15 with sophomores Everette Edison (11th place) and Noah Martinez (14th place) finishing strong.

Up next for San Saba, the girls’ and boys’ varsity squads will have some time off to train for the upcoming UIL Region 4 cross country regional held on Tuesday, November 10 in Corpus Christi. Start times for Class 2A are still to be determined and will be updated in the near future.
