Dillos open up district play with a win

    San Saba (4-2) started off district play 1-0 last Friday night as they defeated the Johnson City Eagles (2-4) 38-15. Both sides of the ball looked to be running on all cylinders as the offense racked up 434 yards of total offense on 59 plays (7.3 avg) and scored on six of their 10 drives. The defense once again played solidly as they forced four punts, two fumbles, an interception and two turnovers on downs while only allowing the Johnson City’s offense to reach the end zone twice. San Saba now will turn its focus towards the Thorndale Bulldogs (4-2, 0-1 in district) in another crucial district game. Game time is scheduled for 7 o’clock in Thorndale.

    Offensive leaders

    Tharp rushed for 241 yards on 19 carries (12.6 avg) and scored four times. Everett carried the ball 10 times for 44 yards and one rushing touchdown, while Graden Lebow contributed 43 yards on eight carries. Glover hauled in four catches for 22 yards, Preston Gray caught two catches for 31 yards, and Skylar Romero had one reception for 38 yards.

    10:04 – San Saba’s opening drive goes 61 yards on four plays and ends with a score when Everett barrels into the end zone from the five-yard line. PAT is good, 7-0 San Saba.

    7:27 – Johnson City is finally able to put points on the board when their QB scrambles out on a busted play from the 32yard line. PAT is good, 21-7 San Saba.

    :33 – The Dillos move the ball quickly 56 yards to the 15-yard line; from there Tharp plows into the end zone for his third score. PAT is good, 28-7 San Saba.

    3:37 – Place kicker Brandon Gonzales splits the uprights on a 22-yard field goal. 31-7 San Saba.

    11: 53 – An intentional grounding penalty in the end zone results in a safety for Johnson City. 31-9 San Saba.

    6: 31 – On fourth down from the 35-yard line, Tharp scrambles away from pressure and scores the final touchdown of the game for the Dillos. PAT is good, 38-9 San Saba.
