Dillos, Lady Dillos Basketball add more victories

The San Saba High School girls and boys varsity basketball teams were in action this past week as both the Lady Dillos and Dillos picked up multiple wins.

It was a fantastic week of basketball for the Lady Dillos as they opened the week with a dominant 53-30 win at home against Salado High School. After Lady Dillos junior guard Madison Shahan started her team off with some hot shooting from the field, San Saba senior forward Landri Glover had a stellar game on both offense and defense against the Lady Eagles as she led all scorers with a game-high 20 points, 10 rebounds, and six steals.

The determined Lady Dillos had a commanding 31-11 lead over a solid Salado team at halftime and were able to cruise the rest of the way as first-year head coach Chris Jost was then able to get quality minutes for his reserve players in the fourth quarter.

Over the weekend, the Lady Dillos took part in a three-day Santo High School Tournament and went 3-1 with the lone loss being a very close 38-36 defeat at the hands of Archer City High School. San Saba had lopsided victories over Tolar High School (52-18), Springtown High School (69-19), and Millsap High School (45-25) in which the Lady Dillos had four different high scorers. Senior guard Martiza Aguirre had nine points vs. Tolar in a balanced offensive attack, senior forward Nojemi Martinez with 11 points against Archer City, Glover with 14 points vs. Millsap, and freshman forward Cinzlea Stanton with 17 points in the 50-point romp of Springtown.

After the Lady Dillos begin District 29-2A games this week on December 14th at home vs. rival Goldthwaite High School, San Saba will travel to take on another district foe on December 17th in Johnson City High School.

As for the San Saba boys varsity squad, they played tenacious defense all night on December 7th as San Saba pulled away for a clutch 57-36 victory at home vs. Llano High School. After the Dillos and visiting Jackets were knotted up at 12-12 in the first quarter, San Saba went on a crucial run in the second quarter to pull ahead to a 26-16 lead at halftime.

Although the Jackets’ cut a 16-point third quarter lead for the Dillos down to just eight points early in the fourth quarter, San Saba dominated the rest of the way as they outscored Llano by a whopping 15-2 margin to pull out the 21-point win at home.

San Saba senior guard Reagan Mejia was outstanding shooting the ball throughout the night and led all scorers with a gamehigh 20 points, while freshman forward Levi Glover added nine points of his own.

Although the Dillos picked up a solid 41-40 victory (sixth consecutive win) against Eastland High School in their first game of the Hamilton High School Tournament over the weekend, they ended up strug gling the last three games. San Saba was beaten soundly 70-45 by larger 4A program Lampasas High School, outlasted 43-35 by tournament host Hamilton, and defeated 47-35 by Comanche High School.

San Saba will look to bounce back and get into the win column on December 14th when the Dillos (6-5 overall record) travel to take on non-district foe Lometa High School. The Dillos will return home on December 17th for another non-district game vs. Valley Mills High School and will begin District 29-2A play on December 21st hosting Harper High School.
