Dillos basketball season ends with hard-fought loss to Sabinal

The San Saba High School boys varsity basketball team continued its playoff run this past week with a 57-50 victory over Yorktown High School and had its season ended with a close 46-43 loss to Sabinal High School.

On February 24, at neutral site Champion High School in Boerne, the Dillos and the Yorktown Wildcats had themselves a great contest from start to finish as San Saba picked up a crucial seven-point victory in the 2A Area Playoffs.

Against Yorktown, San Saba had two players step up immensely in the first and second half of the game. Dillos senior forward Logan Glover had 17 of his gamehigh 24 points in the first half, while junior guard Reagan Mejia caught fire from behind the arc with 13 of his 18 points coming in the second half of action.

With San Saba up 44-40 at the end of the third quarter, the Dillos’ clutch defense and timely scoring kept Yorktown at bay. The Dillos also got seven and six points from senior guard Risien Shahan and senior forward C.J. Greenwell, respectively.

In what was looking like it would be an upset pulled off by the Dillos in a great back-and-forth game, mistakes down the stretch of the game really hurt them as San Saba fell in a 46-43 heartbreaker to one of the top teams in 2A this season.

Against the 19-1 Yellow Jackets in the 2A Regional Quarterfinals held at Paul Taylor Field House in San Antonio, the Dillos played superb team defense for most of the night versus a very high-scoring team led by Sabinal standout guard Cesar Reyes.

With the Dillos leading by as many as eight points in the first half, the potent Sabinal offense came back from a 29-23 halftime deficit to do just enough to get themselves over the hump vs. a hungry San Saba team. Unfortunately, a disastrous final stretch of the fourth quarter with constant turnovers was the nail in the coffin for the Dillos.

In the loss, the Dillos were represented on the scoreboard by Glover with 17 points, Mejia also in double figures with 14 points, Shahan with six points, and Greenwell with six points.

The Dillos varsity basketball squad finished the 2020-21 season under San Saba head coach Mark Kyle with a very impressive 18-5 overall record.
