The San Saba High School varsity baseball team honored six players for Senior Night on Tuesday, April 26, as the Dillos beat secured a pivotal 7-4 victory vs. Harper High School.

Prior to the contest, San Saba recognized Reagan Mejia, Drake Bryant, Weston Oliver, Franco Franco, Wesley Lackey, and Adan Huron for Senior Night festivities.

Down 3-0 to Harper in the bottom of the second inning, San Saba junior Tyler Johnson delivered a clutch two-run single with two outs that cut the deficit to just 3-2.

The Dillos would then take their first lead of the game in the next inning as Oliver came to the plate with Mejia on base and cranked a two-run home run over the left-field fence to give San Saba a 4-3 advantage. However, that lead was shortlived as Harper came to bat in the top of the fourth inning and hit the very first pitch of the frame for a home run to tie things up at 4-4.

San Saba would break through in the bottom of the fifth inning with what would be the game-winning runs against the Longhorns. The Dillos had three straight scoring plays in the frame: an RBI single by junior Lance Taylor that scored Mejia to take the lead, a sacrifice fly by junior Hayden Reeves that scored Franco, and another RBI single from freshman Winton Lackey that scored Taylor to make it 7-4.

The score of 7-4 would hold thanks to great pitching down the stretch from San Saba. After Mejia started the game and struck out six batters in 5.0 innings while just one of the four runs he allowed was earned, Oliver pitched the final 2.0 innings of relief and was almost flawless as he struck out six Longhorn batters while giving up just one hit.

With the victory over Harper, the Dillos officially clinched the No. 3 seed in District 29-2A and finished the regular season with a solid 11-10 overall record and a 6-4 mark in district play under head coach Scott Hayes. San Saba will play the No. 2 seed Sabinal High School from District 30- 2A at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 6, at neutral site Fredericksburg High School in the 2A bi-district playoffs. The second game of the best-of-three series will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game, while Game 3 (if necessary) will start at 1 p.m. the following day.
