The San Saba High School varsity baseball team was in action this past week as the Dillos opened District 29-2A play with a blowout victory at home vs. Center Point High School and then a close loss on the road against a very good Johnson City High School squad.

San Saba Dillos 16, Center Point Pirates 0

In an extremely explosive bottom of the first inning, the Dillos scored a whopping 11 runs that set the tone very early as San Saba cruised on March 22 to a 16-0 dismantling of the Center Point Pirates to begin district play with a dominant win.

After an RBI single to open the scoring by senior Weston Oliver, the Dillos then drew back-to-back walks with the bases loaded to go up 3-0. Following another run scored on a wild pitch, senior Drake Bryant smacked a two-run triple to quickly increase San Saba’s lead to 6-0 over Center Point.

Both Bryant and junior Lance Taylor each had multiple hits and drove in three runs on the evening, while Oliver and fellow Dillos senior teammate Wesley Lackey also had multiple hits and had a pair of RBIs. As a team, the Dillos took full

As a team, the Dillos took full advantage of very erratic pitching from Center Point and also ran wild on the basepaths as San Saba stole a whopping 13 bases and drew seven walks.

On the mound for the Dillos, senior starting pitcher Reagan Mejia only needed to throw 4.0 innings of work while striking out five Pirate batters without allowing a run to score, while Taylor came on to pitch a final scoreless inning of relief in a game decided by the mercy rule.

San Saba Dillos 0, Johnson City Eagles 2

In a game dominated by a great pitchers’ duel, the Dillos came up just short on March 25 in a 2-0 district loss at Johnson City. San Saba gave up its only two runs of the game early as the host Eagles scored one run in the bottom of the third inning and one more in the fourth inning.

In 4.2 innings pitched for San Saba, it was Oliver who threw a fantastic game despite the lack of run support from his offense as he went 4.1 innings with five strikeouts and two runs allowed. Mejia came on in relief and looked solid with a pair of strikeouts and no runs given up.

As a team, San Saba struggled offensively as the squad left four runners on base and had only three hits with Bryant, Taylor, and Lackey all having singles. The Dillos were able to get the leadoff batter aboard in the third, fourth, and sixth innings but unfortunately didn’t have any runs on the board to show for it.

The Dillos also had a nondistrict home game on Saturday afternoon in which they lost 12-1 to Valley Mills High School. After San Saba (6-6 overall record and 1-1 in district play) continues District 29-2A action this Tuesday night by hosting Mason High School, the Dillos will remain at home at 5 p.m. on April 1 vs. Junction High School.
