Armadillos open up season with a win, 14-2

The 2024 football season started on a solid note as the Dillos defeated the Grape Creek Eagles 14-2 last Friday at Rogan Field. The “experts” picked San Saba to win by 21 points, but a sluggish offensive start and several untimely penalties kept the Dillos out of the endzone on multiple occasions. With a roster filled with firsttime varsity players, one might expect some of those hiccups to occur. The defense played strong and kept the Eagles out of the endzone throughout the game which enabled Aguirre's Armadillos to come out with the win. Next week, San Saba will travel to Junction to play the state ranked Eagles which will easily be one of their toughest matches of the season.

Offensive Leaders –

Sophomore QB Luke Tharp led the way for the Dillos as he rushed for 72 yards on 17 attempts (4.2 avg) and scored both touchdowns for the Dillos. Junior Alex Aguirre contributed 31 yards rushing while Senior Alex Estrada chipped in 18 yards followed by Sophomore’s Kaylub Roberts and Jason Everett both having carries for 5 yards each.

From the air, Tharp was 5 of 10 passing for 95 yards with receptions from senior Levi Glover (2 catches 38 yards) and Sophomore Preston Grey (2 catches 16 yards) while junior Trace Temples caught one pass for 41 yards.

Defensive Leaders –

From the safety position, Levi Glover recorded 10 tackles, one of those for a loss while linebackers Jason Everett, Juan Patino and Jefferson Stencil collected 7 tackles each. Skyler Romero and Juan Patino each had an interception, and Omar Landeros’s recovered fumble was caused by Jason Everett. The Dillo defense did a fine job of keeping the Eagles offense at bay as they did not allow any touchdowns to be scored on them; the only points of the game for Grape Creek came way of a snap over the head of the punter that went out of the back of the endzone resulting in a safety.
