On March 7th, the Armadillo basketball team defeated the Normangee Panthers 49-35 in the regional finals in San Marcos, Texas. The win put the Dillos into the state tournament that was to be held March 12th-14th. It was believed to be the 1st time the for any boys’ basketball team to advance all the way to the championship weekend, but upon further research, it was found that the round ball team from 1928 actually was the 1st team to advance. Breaking a 92 year old drought was impressive in itself, but to see how the Dillos did it, was equally impressive. Due to the extra month of football, the Dillos had a limited amount of time before they began district play. But that didn’t seem to faze them as they chalked up a 7-1 record and collected the title of district champs. Then the Dillos went 5-0 in the state playoffs defeating Greater Hearts Monte Vista, Mumford, previously undefeated La Pryor, Weimer and then Normangee. San Saba looked to be the “hot” team heading into the state tournament, but the world had a different plan.

As the players watched other schools play their 1st round and as the parents had started making their way to San Antonio, we all learned those two dreaded words… Coronavirus. The U.I.L. abruptly put the state tournament on hold and sent everyone back home. For weeks, everyone held out hopes that our boys would get to finish what they started, but as days went by and more restrictions on travel and “social distancing” were implemented, it was clear things were looking bleak. Just last week, the U.I.L. finally decided on how the basketball season would end. For the U.I.L. records, no one team will be crowned state champs, but all will be recognized as state finalist. The four remaining schools came together and determined since they would not be allowed to “play out” the last games, they would all agree to the title Co-State Champions. Congratulations to coach Kyle and his Armadillo basketball team on a wild, and amazing season!
