Sharon Ann Whiddon Vogel was born in Houston, Texas, on March 20, 1948, to parents, Rufus and Annie Lou Whiddon. Sharon was the baby of the family with three older sisters: Carol, Joanne, and Jeanne. Sharon attended Henderson Elementary, Jackson Jr. High, and Stephen F. Austin Senior High where she participated in the Drum and Bugle Corps of the Scottish Brigade. She played the bugle, and graduated in 1966. Sharon began working as a telephone operator at South Western Bell Telephone Company while still in high school. She loved music and dancing. She met her husband, Gary Don Vogel, in December of '65 at the Esquire Ballroom where she mistook him for a guy named Jerry her friends had told her about. She called out Jerry as he walked by, he thought she said Gary, they began talking and ended up dating for three years before they married on October 19, 1968. Sharon and Gary were blessed with three children: Kevin Don Vogel, Clay Matthew Vogel, and Angela Sue Vogel Bradley. They resided in Houston for 10 years and then moved in March of '78 to San Saba, the county where Gary was raised. Sharon had numerous jobs in her life and made lots of wonderful friends. She had a joyful personality. She loved to tell jokes and funny stories; laughing with people was second nature to her. She was always happy to open her home to anyone, and in doing so they became family. Sharon worked at San Saba Appraisal District nine years, Business Records in Dallas three years, and lastly LGBS Law Firm for 19 years before she retired.
Sharon was raised in Riverview Baptist Church and Berachah Church, where she was active in the Young People’s Organization and Youth Group. She had a very strong faith and devoted time every day to study God's word. She read her Bible, listened to sermons on tapes, and read many Christian books. Her devotion to God and Bible Doctrine is a legacy she passed on to her children. It was very important to her that her kids knew God's Word and how to apply His Word in their daily lives. She had weekly Bible Studies with them, taught them how to pray, not to be judgmental, how to treat people with impersonal love, and most importantly to have integrity. She was a walking testimony of what a Christian life should look like. She attended the First Baptist Church in San Saba for many years and loved telling her kids about Brother Sam's sermons and what they discussed in Sunday School. Learning God's Word was her biggest hobby and brought her tremendous joy!
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents: Rufus Carroll Whiddon, Annie Lou Whiddon; and her sisters: Carol Lou Whiddon, and Joanne Heines. She is survived by her husband Gary Don Vogel; her sister Jeanne Lassetter; her children: Kevin Don Vogel and wife Susan Vogel, Clay Matthew Vogel and Christina Ann Vogel, Angela Sue Vogel Bradley and her husband Jim Bob Bradley; grandchildren: Kory Scott Vogel, Kelsey Kaye Vogel Cantu and husband Alfred Steve Cantu, Matthew Todd Buckholt, Grant Scott Buckholt, Cayson Matthew Vogel, Caylee Ann Vogel, Carter Miller Vogel, Caylor Miller Vogel, Sharon Beth Bradley, and Caleb James Bradley; her great-grandchildren: Tyson Bradley Guard, Ava Kaye Cantu, Axel Don Cantu, and Kane Alexander Cantu; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
A Visitation will be held on Friday, October 30, at San Saba’s First Baptist from 1:00-1:45 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, October 30, at San Saba’s First Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. with Brother Sam Crosby officiating. Interment will follow at China Creek Cemetery.
