Paris Maurene Romero, age 93, passed away on August 11, 2020, surrounded by her family at her home. She was born October 23, 1926, at the family farm in Algerita, Texas, to Nelson and Paris (Wood) Gaddy. Maurene, as she was known, graduated from the University of Texas in Austin on January 29, 1947, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree.

She met and married Rafael Angel Romero (deceased) in Austin, Texas, and moved to Maracaibo, Venezuela, where she worked for Shell Oil Company. She returned to San Saba in 1965, where she raised her children and provided care to her parents. As the Deputy Director of Hill Country Community Action Association, Inc., Maurene was instrumental in implementing many of the social programs of the 1960s in the San Saba area. She was recognized for 30 years of service (1968–1998) to the citizens of San Saba County, the surrounding counties and the State of Texas. She was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in San Saba.

Maurene was preceded in death and is now reunited with her son, Joe Romero; her daughter, Marianella Romero Johnson; her parents and brothers, Carson, Kyle and Woodson.

She is survived by Nelson and Lorena Romero-Gaddy of Houston; Gladys Romero-Gaddy of San Saba; Elvia Romero Hyatt of San Saba; son-in-law, Tommy Johnson of San Saba; Marisela Romero Spears of San Saba; Ryan and Jonna Gaddy of San Angelo; 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews; and her wonderful caregiver, Oralia Huron. Maurene also leaves behind her four-legged companion of 18 years, Lucy.

Mother, or Mamaw, was greatly loved by all of her family. The steadfast guidance and advice she instilled in her family and friends will be part of her legacy.

A memorial service and private interment will be held at a later date at Algerita Cemetery.
