Marta was born on January 19, 1931, in San Saba, Texas, the daughter of Ernesto Reyes Sr. and Emilia (Osua) Reyes. In her youth, she helped her family with farming duties including cotton and pecan picking in various places such as Tucson, Arizona; Corpus Christi and Pleasanton, Texas; to name a few. She met the love of her life, Mike Gonzales, Jr., as he also picked cotton in his younger years. She married Mike on August 25, 1951, in San Saba, and they spent 64 love-filled years together before his passing in February of 2016. Once she settled down in San Saba, she worked as a house cleaner for several individuals giving her over 45 years’ experience. She enjoyed being outside tending to her plants and flowers, raking leaves, cleaning and selling her ‘nopalitos’ (cactus), and taking trips to San Juan, Texas. Marta liked watching sports, especially the Dallas Cowboys. She loved animals, particularly her cats, that she fed and took care of every morning. She loved her family near and far, especially her ‘chiquillas.’
Marta is survived by two sons: Avilio Gonzales of San Saba and David Gonzales of San Saba; one daughter, Alicia Perez and husband Cruz of San Saba; one brother, Ernesto Reyes Jr. and wife Virginia of San Saba; two sisters, Leonila Gill of Round Rock and Maria Gonzales and husband Manuel of Coolidge, Arizona. She left behind a legacy of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mike Gonzales; two sons, Albert Gonzales and Mario Gonzales; three brothers: Juan Reyes, Jesus Reyes, and Jose Reyes; and two sisters, Emelia Campos (Chacha) and Macrina Esquivel.
