Bernice Sloan age 100, of San Saba, Texas, passed away December 19, 2021, in San Saba, Texas. Bernice was born in Marble Falls, Texas, to Wilson A. and Cedonia (Cureton) Burnam. Bernice attended grade school at Shovel Mountain where she and her sister, Louise, rode a horse to and from school. Bernice made sure to note that she always had to ride “behind” the saddle and never in it. She moved with her family to San Saba County during the depression to the Leonard Ranch where her father managed the pecan operations. She graduated from San Saba High School in 1939. She married Frank A. Sloan and they made their home on the Sloan Ranch in San Saba County for over 79 years. Mern, as she was known to her family, enjoyed gardening and playing bridge and 42. She was also quite an accomplished seamstress, and there was nothing too hard for her to make, including beautiful quilts, afghans and needlepoint works, to name a few. Her signature creations were her homemade bonnets which she wore every day.

She and Frank were avid golfers in their later years and golfed around the country and abroad every year. She became quite skilled at the sport and even made a hole-in-one on the San Saba Golf Course. Bernice was a fabulous cook and enjoyed feeding the cowhands as much as she did her family. She was a devout Christian and member of the New Hope Presbyterian Church at Sloan Community.

Those left behind to cherish her memory are her children: sons - Bill Sloan and wife Linda of San Saba, Texas, and Mike Sloan and wife Leslie of Austin, Texas; grandsons - Jeff Sloan and wife Susie, Damon Sloan and wife Lisa, and Aaron Sloan and wife Lynn; great-grandchildren - Sara Sloan-Corsi and husband Travis, Wil Sloan, Jenna Sloan-Lester and husband Blaise, Burnam Sloan and wife Kimeri, Olivia Sloan, and Morgan Sloan; and great-great grandchildren - Kayden Sloan, Macey Lester, and Valley Corsi. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank Sloan; and one sister, Louise Jones.
