Barbara Elizabeth Ward Sloan passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, in San Saba, Texas. She was born in San Saba, Texas, on January 24, 1929, to Lynn Cyril and MaeMaline Ward. She graduated from San Saba High School, attended Southwestern University where she pledged Tri Delta and later earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Texas State.

Barbara married Tom Alan Sloan February 26, 1949. On January 1, 1966, they and their two daughters moved to ‘Merivale’ Injune, Queensland, Australia to continue cattle ranching. There she stepped back into Pioneer Days; wood cook stove, no running hot water, kerosene refrigerator, outhouse, electricity when the diesel engine was running and a telephone that worked intermittently. She was the chief cook and bookkeeper and adept at running interference for whatever calamity presented itself.

She was a fan of the Texas Rangers, enjoyed watching horse racing and tennis. She cut a mean jitterbug and liked country and western dancing. A voracious reader, she always had a book close at hand. She was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church, San Saba, Texas, often singing in the choir. Having grandchildren half a world apart, she made many trips across the ocean. Being their enthusiastic fan, she attended many sporting events, dance performances, gymnastic meets and anything in which they were involved.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Tom Alan Sloan; and her brother, Jimmy Ward. She is survived by her daughters: Jan Sloan Hornick and husband Greg of Australia, and Claudia Sloan Zinser of Coppell, Texas; her sister, Joycelyn McRorey; grandchildren: Roland Hornick and wife Lindy, Blair Hornick and wife Tanya, Sam Hornick and wife Susan of Australia, Jalyn Zinser Frasier and husband Larry from Aurora, Texas, and Monica Zinser Wilkes and husband Jason from Boerne, Texas; great-grandchildren: Blythe, Jericho, Amelie, Zeke, Katja and Titus Wilkes, Sophie Hornick, Darby and Beau Frasier, and Henry and Hugo Hornick.

Visitation was held Thursday, December 29th, at Blaylock Funeral Home. Service was Friday, December 30th, at New Hope Presbyterian Church followed by burial in Sloan Cemetery.
